Schmidt Meister Posted February 6, 2023 Share Posted February 6, 2023 Vegan Florida parents Ryan Patrick O'Leary, 30, and Sheila O'Leary, 35, have been charged with first-degree murder for starving their 18-month-old son to death by refusing to feed him anything but raw fruits and vegetables. They have also been charged with aggravated child abuse, aggravated manslaughter, child abuse and two counts of child neglect by a grand jury in Lee County, Florida. According to a police report, the toddler only weighed 17 pounds when he died, the approximate appropriate weight for a child less than half his age. The parents explained that they are vegan and only feed their children fruits and vegetables. They have three other children, a three and five-year-old who are in custody and an eleven-year-old who is currently with her biological father. State attorney Amira Fox was appalled by what she witnessed: "The evidence and crime scene in this case are gut-wrenching. These are images as a mother and state attorney I will not be able to forget." Patrick and Sheila O'Leary will appear in court on Monday, December 23. Update: Sheila O’Leary’s sentence was imposed in the afternoon on Monday, Aug. 29, 2022 after several postponements, prosecutors announced. “This afternoon, Sheila O’Leary was adjudicated guilty and sentenced to life in prison for First Degree Murder. She was also sentenced to 30 years in prison for Aggravated Child Abuse and 30 years in prison for Aggravated Manslaughter of a Child,” said a press release from the Office of the State Attorney for the 20th Judicial Circuit of Florida. “She was sentenced to 5 years in prison on two counts of Child Neglect and one count of Child Abuse.” Ryan Patrick O'Leary. Additional charges of sexual assault on a victim younger than 12 and lewd and lascivious behavior/molestation on a victim younger than 12 were filed on Ryan O'Leary.
