"The first black members of congress were elected shortly after the end of the Civil War, and the first 23 elected (21 Representatives and 2 Senators) were in fact Republicans. The first Representative and Senator were both elected in 1870. The first Democrat Representative was elected in 1935, and the first Senator in 1993."

That's because for many years after the Civil War, Blacks were intelligent and free thinking enough to understand what party granted them freedom and what party ran the KKK.  Regardless of when the first Black Democrat Representative was elected, 1968, the Chicago Riots, and Democrat President Lindon B. Johnson were the pivotal points in political change for black America.  Seems Old Lindon and the DNC made a deal with certain influential Black leaders to swing the Black vote to the Democrat Party.  LBJ laughingly made some unrepeatable comments about Blacks and how long they were going to be tied to the Democrat Party because of the deal and give away programs as a result.  If you paid attention to TV news back then, you would have noticed certain influential Black leaders suddenly wearing much nicer clothing and within a short time some very expensive suits.

Absolutely correct.
