Early WWI fighters were sometimes equipped with steel plates on the back of prop blades to keep the machine guns from cutting the blades in two. Then someone developed a disconnecter to keep the guns from firing while a blade would pass in front.

Roland Garros put the deflectors on a Morane-Salnier in 1915, IIRC.

Then some Dutch Fokker figured out the workable interruptor gear.
