It's also interesting that as the leading computer power in the world, the USA has built massive super computers that give us the capability of simulating Nuclear explosions of modern devices, thus lowering cost substantially, while increasing the resulting data, and reducing the necessity of actual detonations to verify design improvements. Our numbers of super computers allows more simultaneous simulations than in many other nations. Speed in computers means more investigations of more variables, So speed is of course very important, but so is the number a computers capable of simulations. In this realm, we lead the world.
blueiron
Some of the descriptive science is incorrect for the IVY MIKE shot, but the runaway result of the shot, in excess of 10 Mt., validated the Ulam-Teller concept. Little known is that this test shot had a fatal casualty attributed to it. USAF Captain J.P. Robinson was detailed to fly through the stem of the blast in a F-84G fighter in order to collect radioisotopes. After doing so, he and another USAF pilot could not locate radionavigation beacons because of the effects of the blast. They flew on attempting to locate their radio vectors to landing and in doing so, they ran short of fuel, including their reserves. The other pilot ran out of fuel at altitude and managed to make a hard landing on the runway, but Captain Robinson ran out of fuel and crashed into the sea. Neither he or his aircraft were located.
