In 1884 its pastor, Rev. Joseph Loyzance purchased 10 acres of historic farmland and erected a cross and small chapel overlooking the Mohawk Valley. He called the shrine “Our Lady of Martyrs” for the Blessed Mother who stood at the cross of Jesus and for three Jesuit missionaries who were martyred on that spot in the 17th century. More property was purchased to accommodate growing numbers of pilgrims and the enormous Coliseum church was completed in 1931. This building seats 6,500 people with standing room from an additional 3,500.
