Château de la Brède, Gironde 🇫🇷

Construction started in 1306 AD under the order of prolific castle builder, King of England Edward I, and was modified significantly over the following 200 years. In 1419 the château was badly damaged by French artillery shells, but was repaired and fortified further, and remained In the hands of an aristocratic family loyal to the English throne until near the end of the Hundred Years War.

At her death in 2004, the Countess of Chabannes, the last owner of the fortified château, bequeathed all her belongings, including the castle, to the Foundation named after her. The castle is now open to visitors and is classed by the French Ministry of Culture as a monument historique.
