I went to work 4:00am, in the yard office getting paperwork for a train to come home. -8, wind chill -22

a yard conductor walks in (30+years seniority) his beard and ‘stache are frozen, his coat could have stood up by itself. He walks in and takes off his coat, jacket, liner, hat, scarf, etc.

sots down at the table and grabs a paper towel to dry off his beard. Looks at my conductor and says, just as even as can be,

“cold out there”

my conductor (40+ years) looks up and says

”yeah, that’s what I hear”

“coffees fresh”

“thanks”

I love working with the old guys, nothing gets to them.

23 years and I’m still the kid

.
