To those young people who haven't lived through many years of political discourse, this might be hard to believe but there was a time when leftists, Democrats, and their allies in the media would stand by this phrase:

“I wholly disapprove of what you say and will defend to the death your right to say it.”

In fact, they would repeat it often, as justification for scolding those on the right who didn't want to listen to opposing viewpoints.  How quaint.  How innocent.  How naive.

Then came Saul Alinsky.  Congratulations, Fascist Left.  You've arrived.
