willie-pete
Minuteman. This just opened in Wyoming last month. FYI, not me.
blueiron
That's far more luxurious than our accommodations were: Of course, if the "Grand Tour" came, Q-01, along with 399 other sites were either vanishing or likely to be severely damaged. Assuming we weren't aboard ship at the start of the circus, we might have lasted just long enough to reach the limits of endurance of the MOPP gear and ammo.
willie-pete
At least in Titan we could go upstairs and take a short walkabout under the stars inside the fence; Minuteman crews could not do that on alert. I won't even talk about the two crew members that took a walkabout outside the fence AND THEN GOT LOST. Of course, most of the 400 sites were just missiles; not people. One LCF controlled 10 missiles and by the time any inbounds came in; chances were they were just empty holes in the ground that just got a little bit bigger.
blueiron
A counter-force attack assumes that a L-O-W scenario and that can be in error, based on the technology. Another issue is that even if the Russians / then-Soviets launched a pre-emptive first counter-force strike, not all LGM-30G missiles may be launched, depending on what MAO is selected. The other problem of the aftermath, even if the exchange is halted after initial exchange, is that American soil becomes a poisonous agent that will kill millions in the days after the strike and the American bread basket is effectively destroyed wiping out medium and large scale agriculture in the US. This presupposes that ground burst fuzing is chosen for maximal seismic effect. Though with the multi-megaton warheads the Russians/Soviet prefer, missiles such as the RS-20V / SS-18 with their single 20 megaton warhead and 250 ft CEP, would vaporize many strategic force targets such as the KUMSC, Global Strike Command HQ, etc. while the lower yield warheads take out VLF, HF, UHF, and SHF transmission nodes and the E-6A and E-4B links to the NCA. Doing this reduces the SSBN threat to boats in their patrol zones and killing them as they rise to their launch depth.

I was siting on alert one night and got the message to insert launch keys.
