Refresh an old farts memory?

.

Apollo 1 fire on this date; killed Gus Grisson, Ed White and Roger Chaffee as they set in the Command Module during a test. The photo is  what is left of Pad 34 at Cape Canaveral where the Saturn V/Apollo 1  would have launched from.

Pure oxygen probably wasn't a good idea.

And RIP, they were heroes.

More than a few bad ideas; a lot of nylon mesh hanging around, pure O2 and a plug type hatch which could not be opened under pressure. Though they were badly burned, probably post-mortem; the autopsy revealed they died from heart failure due to CO.
