It makes sense that Black Panther is the first, considering it not only dominated the box office -- bringing in $1.3 billion worldwide including $700 million domestically, making it the biggest film of 2018 in the U.S. and proving without a doubt that audiences around the world will pay to see a huge tentpole fronted by an all-black cast -- but became a cultural movement. SC Tiger Posted January 23, 2019 Share Posted January 23, 2019 (edited) We Were Soldiers and Saving Private Ryan were both snubbed by the Oscars (I think Ryan was nominated, not sure about WWS). To me the award is even more meaningless now. Kinda like how the Heisman is now meaningless to me since Deshaun Watson never won it once. Didn't last year's winner have something to do with a woman ******* a fish? One year was about a black gay dude (nothing wrong with that) and nobody ever saw the movie. It was pure "Oscar Bait" I think they called it. And if we are nominating superhero blockbusters, The Dark Knight should have gotten a nod. But not to worry, the heavy lifting has been done by real American Heroes, and being a minority isn't as dangerous as it was when I was young.
