When someone says they’ll “just be a moment,” they’re probably unaware that that actually means they’ll be precisely 90 seconds. In medieval reckoning at least, a moment was once very precisely defined as one-fortieth of an hour, or one-tenth of a “point” (a point, incidentally, being 15 minutes)—or, in other words, a minute and a half.
