Dric902
Don’t blame him at all In his letter to Trump, Mattis acknowledged that a strong nation relies on a "comprehensive" network of alliances, and must be "resolute and unambiguous" in approaching countries with strategic differences, citing China and Russia. "Because you have the right to have a Secretary of Defense whose views are better aligned with yours on these and other subjects, I believe it is right for me to step down from my position," Mattis wrote.
Clancy
His resignation is a very classy way of saying I fundamentally disagree with you on just about everything. 1
TXUSMC
General Mattis was the single most confidence inspiring leader in D.C. His only agenda was the defense of the nation. He completely understood the gravity of his oath of office... both as a Marine officer for 30+ years, and as SECDEF. A man of unshakeable integrity, the rarest of breeds inside the Beltway. If you tried to thank him, he would tell you that it was his honor to serve. Semper Fi, sir.

All of what you said is what is so disconcerting about his resignation. Gonna be nigh impossible to replace his focus and determination to defend America. 2
G19Tony
I was very disappointed to hear this. Can't think of anyone who can fill those shoes. Trump lost a good one. 2
tous
General Mattis may be a good man, but I must side with Mr. Trump on this one. What is the benefit to the United States, other than some, We're there to give them liberty! platitude, in Syria? US forces could kill every radical Muslim in the country and Syria would still be an enemy state controlled by Russia and Iran. So, like in Afghanistan and Iraq, the US spends vast sums of blood and treasure and the Afghans and the Iraqis laugh at us as they bank our money and kill our soldiers. We're nothing but chumps and the entire world is ready and eager to prove it. 5
holyjohnson
President Trump said and i paraphrase "after i kill ISIS in Syria,i`m out" i don`t want a hamstrung U.S. Military being pawns in a political game with a deck stacked against us. i have nothing but respect for Gen. Matthis and more so now knowing he did what was right by his oath, his Morals and his Honor in resigning. Great American!

I have to wonder if Trump made his position clear to Mattis prior to his public announcement.
Center Mass 762
Between this and the bumpfire stock ban, I'm betting Trump loses quite a few votes in 2020.
Mrs.Cicero
I'd be thrilled if he were stepping down so he could run for president in 2020. Otherwise, I'm sad.

Felt the same about Gen Tommy Franks back in the day .
