Cool, thanks.  That's a lot of rebar.

What were the crews' assessment of surviving a first strike?

Titan could launch within 1 minute of the message; so if the Russians were smart they would not want to waste a missile on blowing up an empty hole.  If they were dumb and inaccurate; we could still survive a near miss with all the concrete that was around us. If they were dumb and accurate; we would be sitting at the bottom of a 1,000 foot hole in the ground. They were designed to survive near-misses ( or near hits depending on you point of view ).

The birdcage shaped control center was built as a fallout shelter; CBR filters on air intakes;, underground water systems, diesel generator/1000 gallon fuel tank and 1 month supply of food/water for four crew members; all the comforts of home. After two weeks, radioactivity would have declined to pre-attack levels so we though our chances were fair to middlin'.

I was at 3-8 ,  the Alternate Command Post site which would have taken command if Little Rock AFB was blown away. So if LR was gone and we had a few missiles that didn't launch because they were held in reserve and had not been blown away; for a while i would have been

King of the World.

I miss the cold war time. America was united for the most part, and communism / socialism was the enemy. Not the other way around.

I agree; back then most people wanted .gov to protect them from the enemy.  Now those same people think .gov is the enemy. A couple of generations from now; not much telling WTH it will be like.

Glad I won't be here.

****, we have open Socialists in Congress right now.  It's fashionable to be Socialist.  Back in the day, Socialist countries were recognized as failures, and dangerous ones at that.
