ISANTI COUNTY, Minn. - A Minnesota sheriff's deputy is lucky to be alive after the squad car he was driving collided with a deer Saturday morning, Oct. 21.

Graphic pictures released by the Isanti County Sheriff's Office on its Facebook page show what's left of the deputy's squad car, and it isn't much.

The bumper guard on the front end was bent, the windshield completely smashed, the hood nearly torn off and the engine was left smoking after the accident. The deputy was able to escape uninjured, as the video shows him on bodycam footage exiting the vehicle and monitoring the area of the crash.

The deputy is being commended for choosing not to swerve to avoid the deer, but hitting it head-on instead. In the Facebook post, Isanti County Sheriff Chris Caulk says, "if the deputy swerved, he would have rolled and been injured or worse. Staying in a straight line kept the injuries to a minimum when the air bags deployed."

According to Caulk, the deputy was traveling around 114 mph with his lights and sirens on when he struck the deer. The deputy was responding to a report about a man with a gun at a local restaurant in Cambridge, Minn.

Caulk reminded all motorists to keep an eye out for deer, as they are on the move with deer hunting season beginning soon.

Air bag technology in modern cars is amazing.

Wife and I got T boned in my last car and they had to cut the air bags from around her to get her out of the car.  Car was hit on her side.  We both walked away with no injuries.  Interestingly, I was thrown sideways so quickly that the drivers air bag went over my left shoulder and didn't touch me but I damned near kissed the center console.

Dang.  Glad he is ok.  Good thing his ride was militarized? ?

But, seriously, from how the video appears to me, it looks like the car's headlights have insufficient throw at that speed.  I'd certainly advocate for bigger, brighter headlights for increased officer safety.

That was my thought, he's out running his headlights at that speed.
