This case is about misguided overreach

so the field in question is labeled as "historic pasture"

completely surrounded by industrial facilities.

I can understand the city not wanting the trees removed.  I'd say it comes down to whether the city can prove that there was any type of ordinance in place when they purchased the property that overrides the city ordinance of requiring a permit to remove trees from their property.  Even then, the farming exemption would seem to cover it.

half a million dollars seems a bit excessive.

Oh, and having to have replacement trees already planted before you are allowed to remove/harvest an existing tree?  That's not how logging or farming works.  Gotta remove the existing crop in order to plant a new one.

Hope the brothers win this one, and saddle the township with all the legal fees.
