I nearly broke the law this morning

Recommended Posts

I have been getting my archery equipment ready for moose hunting. Somehow I was convinced season started on the 20th. I was all ready to get out there and stick one this morning. I called my son last night to discuss gear, and he says, "I'm certain archery starts on the 22nd, Dad." I grabbed the regulation booklet. Yup, the 22nd. Well there is a bull moose out there that got his execution day pushed back a little. Glad I'm not getting my truck and hunting gear confisticated this morning. (yeah I purposely misspelled confiscated cause that's how an old friend of mine always pronounced it)

Would that be Mr. Earp in the middle and Mr. Masterson on his left?

Pictured in Nome, Alaska, Wyatt Earp (center) is shown with Norwegian frontiersman Ed Englestadt (at left) and former Tombstone Epitaph editor John Clum (at right) who was in Nome to run the postal service.

I have a related anecdote. In 1962, when I was almost 16 years old, I went Duck Hunting in the Great South Bay, Long Island, NY. I left the dock in Seaford in a 14 foot Skiff with a 1955 Evinrude 25hp Outboard at about 4:30 am. It was early January and the weather was poor: cold, high winds, overcast (no stars). I had only an old military 3Angle Head Flashlight for illumination, but was familiar with the bay. The tide was so high that the grassy islands were submerged and useless for piloting, but I was able to see some distant lights to help me locate Channel Marker Poles which momentarily blocked there view disclosing their locations. It was a difficult five mile run. I was alone.

I set up my decoys and a small blind, covered my boat with old tarps, then waited for dawn. The Sun rose and there was no sign of ducks, or humanity. It was freezing out. I drank some coffee and continued to wait patiently.

Around 10:00 am, I heard a boat approaching from behind me. It was a Game Ranger. He pulled up to the island and came over to me. I asked if he wanted coffee, but he said “No.”, then asked,

“Had any luck?”

I said, “No. I hadn’t seen anything flying.”

“What are you hunting for?”, he asked.

“Duck”, I said.

Then he said, “You’re lucky, today.”

This didn’t make sense, so I asked why?

He laughed and said, “Duck season closed last night.”

Like to see (even stock)pics of what set up takes a moose by archery... ignorant on this...

I use a modern compound bow. In my case a Parker. Draw weight is 80#. I shoot an aluminum arrow 32" long tipped with Satellite broadheads with razor inserts. This set up often results in pass through shots, as in the arrow goes all the way through and gone. Lung shots are preferred. They usually don't go far, and if they do there is a blood trail to follow. Lots of bow hunters these days are using carbon arrows for light weight, more speed and flatter trajectory. I prefer the greater kinetic energy of my set up on an animal the size of a moose.

You'd better get cracking or you won't get your 3 felonies in for the day.
