Coney Island Hot Dogs

Almost put this thread in the “Religion” sub-forum.

Detroit Conies, like Detroit Pizza,

are the best! At least they were forty years ago.

Nothing in the world like an Onassis Coney!

Steamed bun, a “dog” that snapped when bitten, shredded Cheddar and minced onions.

Don’t forget the ribbon of yellow mustard!

I moved to Tulsa almost thirty years ago.

“The Coney Islander” is a decent, local Tulsa chain.

The absolute best Tulsa Coney, IMHO is from Ike’s Chile House on Eleventh Street. You have to eat it with a fork.

Ike’s has been around for over 100 years.

Will Rogers loved Ike’s Chile

Will Rogers couldn’t be wrong!

I lived in Tulsa almost all my life, moved to Fort Worth to retire close to family. One thing I really miss about Tulsa is Coney Island. I really like the one downtown and the one at 41st and Yale. I can’t find a good ‘dog in Fort Worth. I also miss Mazzio’s and Hideaway pizza but that’s fodder for another thread.

Back when there was a Tiger Stadium and Hygrade Ball Park Franks were made in Detroit, there was a certain standard according to Michigan Law.

No dicks, udders, lips or assholes, etc.

”Hygrade” meant High Grade.

Maybe it had something to do with the high percentage of Roman Catholics and Jews.

 I don’t know for sure.

What I do know, is as long as Hygrade was made in Detroit, one never had to worry about eating something abominable when going to a Tiger game.

Going to Ike’s on Eleventh Street tomorrow for lunch. Will cruisearound Fourth eand Denver tomorrow.

Used to patronize the original Fourth Street Coney Islander location almost every evening while assigned to the Main Post Office in Tulsa in the Nineties.

The Eleventh and Delaware location is still a good place to go.

Ever eat at Ike’s?

I sincerely believe that you had to have grown up in NYC, Detroit or Tulsa to have experienced a really decent Coney.

Why Tulsa? No idea.

All I know is that Tulsa, for whatever reason, offers up some damed fine Coneys!

One of those mysteries!

I used to eat at Ike’s when it was on Admiral. Great chili. I always wanted to try that bowl with chili on one side and mac & cheese on the other. Since we are talking food, I’m a big fan of Ron’s too.

I also ate at Ike’s when it was on Admiral between Sheridan and Memorial.

You know, on the North side of Admiral between the two loan sharks.

LOL!

Only those that have been there know what I mean.

Damned good Chile Mac and Cheese.

I love hot dogs.  Especially with chili and cheese.

There is a place in Vero Beach a block from the ocean called Casey's.  It's just an ordering window and a pick up window and some outdoor tables with umbrellas.  Best hot dogs, burgers, and fries anywhere.

Somehow, I figured you out-classed hotdogs. :dunno:

New York, Chicago, L.A, and a select few places in other parts of the country have the best Hot Dogs and chili dogs. and these are not the kinds of hot dogs you find in the grocery store. The absolute best dogs have the casings on them and are steamed, not boiled, so that the casing snaps when you bite into it. In Los Angeles, the place to go is Pinks on Melrose and La Brea and the greatest culinary delight is a Chili dog with mustard, onions and sauerkraut.

There are two other great Hot dog stands in L.A. and those are Cupid's and Oki-dog. Cupids are very similar to Pinks, but Oki-dog is like nothing else in the world. An Oki-dog is two regular hot dogs, (no casings) with mustard and onions wrapped in a flour tortilla like a burrito and stuffed with chili Oki-dog is so named because the owners are from Okinawa.

I'm going to Costco today for the $1.50 hot dog and soda. I miss the Polish Dog but their hot dogs are good too.

Yep, good stuff, great price. The person who decided to get rid of the polish should be outed. They sell, the polish in the store but just to dang many for my small family.

I like James Coney Island in the Houston area. Their bowls of chili are fabulous. I am sad the downtown location is closed. I fondly remember my grandfather taking us there.

I forgot about that place, I used to live in Houston too. At James you can get fries to go with your coney. I don’t like cheese on my coney but I like the James fries with melted cheese and chili.
