Farewell to the ‘Conservative Movement’

Movements are, almost by definition, attractive to the young and the emotionally immature. Followers love to follow; even more, they love to memorize catechisms and rote talking points, which they parrot on the air and in column inches, as if by simply asserting their “principles” they are proving them as well.

Mr. Walsh wrongly assumes that Classical Liberalism will predominate in the United States. The U.S. is no longer the nation of Locke and Montesquieu, but of Rousseau, Owen, and Fourier. Our economy is not that of Milton Friedman or F.A. Hayek and the Austrian School, but of an incestuous relationship of Goldman, Sachs and the U.S. Treasury. The American nation longed for a utopia; with political conservatives claiming that a deity would reward us with it after death, while political liberals claimed that they could build us one while we live.

The West has effectively acquiesced the world stage. Our decline was inevitable and is underway. The Russians and the Eastern Orthodox believe that they will be the next vanguard of Western intellectual tradition, but Beijing has their own vote and they are beginning to exercise it.
