My father started out in my old home town by purchasing a Pure Oil gas station styled just like this (file photo).  It was on the intersection of a major highway and the main street.  He did well.  Only had room to "turn around" in the building.

Still such a building in Nolensville TN on 31A/41A. Surprised it is still around.

After WWII my grandfather came home to Pretty Prairie Kansas and managed a service station for awhile. The station sat by itself on the highway a mile east of town
one night an out of state car pulls in and wants a fill up. As my grandfather is pumping the gas he sees this guy's reflection in the cars window. The guy had a large crescent wrench cocked back over his shoulder ready to strike my grandfather. Grandpa stuck the gas nozzle in the guys face, told him to drop the wrench and leave.
My dad still has that wrench in his shop.

Hope the gasoline was flowing at that time...
