So talk me into or out of a Tavor

So I just paid for a suppressor, will hopefully get it by early next year.

I already have a 308 bolt action, and an AR-15 in 5.56.

I'm thinking that I want to get the Tavor X95 is 300 blackout to run suppressed sub sonic rounds.

I know I can cheaply get a 300BO upper and throw it on the AR-15 I already have, but I would prefer to keep the weapons systems that can have potential issues apart.  I don't want to risk a 300BO magazine being loaded in the 5.56 upper, as that is much bad juju.

I'd also like to make it a more compact package, which means either going the AR15 pistol with brace route, or filing for a SBR tax stamp and waiting, which I would also not like to do.

The solution I came up with is getting a tavor in 300 blackout, and running it with different magazines than I keep for the AR-15 (which is magpul gen 2)

I'm still debating it, as I don't have a lot of money to throw around, but the bullpups have been on my mind for a few years now, and the X95 seems to have fixed a lot of the complaints that people had about the Tavor SAR.  Looks like they can be found as low as $1600 for the 300BO version before shipping and transfer fees.

As for reasons, first is because I kind of want one.  Main purpose would be to play with, second would be hunting and probably leave it set up as my home defense gun.  (can't hunt with less than .24 caliber for deer in my state)

I would also be reloading for it, possibly casting my own bullets and doing powder coat.  I know you can cast for 5.56 at higher velocities, but there seems to be a lot less science and magic involved if you are casting for lower velocity rounds.

Down low on the list but still on my mind is that my state (Washington) keeps trying to go further and further liberal, and if I wait too long it might become difficult to purchase here in the future.

Anyone here have any experience with the Tavor in 300BO and a suppressor?  Or any tavor with a suppressor for how it feels and handles?  There are a few yewtube videos out there that make it look like it should be a really good setup for running suppressed, but I trust you guys more than the guys in the videos.

I have the Tavor in 556, nice compact package. Fun to shot. Mine is the original design and if I had to do it over, I would go with updated version with the more traditional magazine release.  I haven't had any issues out of mine and every time I go to the range and have it, everyone wants to shot it.

Instead of SBR AR why not a 300BO AR pistol configuration with a brace?

I've thought about it, and it would cost half or less than the Tavor.  I don't know why but something about an AR being shortened that much just doesn't sit right with me.  I know it's not explicitly illegal to shoulder one with a brace, but to me it's still kind of skirting around the edges of the law, and the idea makes me a little uncomfortable.   The major upside of a pistol AR15 is with a concealed pistol license in my state it's legal to have a loaded pistol in a vehicle, where a rifle is not.

That's really the question, whether the uniqueness of the Tavor outweighs the simplicity and lower cost of the pistol AR15.

Tavor 7 is designer from the factory to accommodate silencers.

Sure, you can make the SAR or X95 work but then don’t complain about gas leak around the ejection port cover.

Besides who wouldn’t want a .308 Tavor? I know I do.

Non reciprocating charging handle and no forward assist?

I don't think that I have ever used the forward assist on my rifle, either civilian or military usage, and short of severe duty conditions (idiot that didn't ever clean his gun and shot crap ammo all the time) I've never heard of anyone else needing it either.

The 300BO version has an adjustable gas port.  Only 2 position and not 4, but it's there, just harder to get to than the Tavor 7 (in the top rail, but you have to depress a plunger to turn it)

As for leak around the gas port, it's one of the few places I'd try to "upgrade" on the rifle.

As for the Tavor 7, it would be great to have, but kind of defeats the purpose of going subsonic.  Extra weight and higher price aren't worth it to me for this application.  Typically if I'm shooting 308 it's for longer range precision, which the tavor series is not particularly known for.

I'd love to have the Tavor 7, and it would probably work for what I want, but I'm also considering maybe getting the 9mm conversion for the X95 as well, which I don't think they have for the larger gun.

When Thunder Ranch was still in Texas I've seen them used.  Lots of sand.  I've had to bump one of my AK's once.

I guess that makes more sense.  Where I'm at there isn't much sand or dust unless you go to places like the beach or over the mountains, so shouldn't be much issue for me.

Nice to know that they are actually there for a reason though :)

These are the shizzle, and a cheaper option.  No SBR paperwork.

I still haven't pulled the trigger on one yet though...

That doesn't sound half bad, , but I'd want something that can take a quick attach type mount so I can easily use the suppressor on multiple hosts and not just the rifle.

Only issue to me is price.  $1k for an upper is starting to push up into Tavor price range when you add a good quality lower to it, and there are places online selling the X95 at around $1600 shipped for the 300BO model.  Benefit would be only having to pay the transfer and tax on the lower, which brings $100 or so off the total price, but I'm still leaning away from another AR15.
