The “Angel of Death Victorious” guards the Haserot family gravesite in Cleveland’s Lake View Cemetery. Commissioned in the 1920s by Francis Haserot, Dutch artist Herman Matzen designed the life-sized bronze sculpture. It’s now green from oxidation and she holds an upside down torch for those who have died.

Her patina color is in sharp contrast to the brown marble behind her. Years of Ohio’s climate has stained her face with black ‘tears’ rolling down her cheeks and neck, which has given her an evocative image. After traveling to Cleveland and seeing her, I can assure you she is even more stunning and haunting in person.
