How did the snowflake stuff start?

Back when gun boards started, we were men.  We were rough, tough, thick skinned, and could give and take shots.  Some stuff was infraction worthy, but mostly typical male grabass stuff was taken with humor and thick skin.

What happened that caused gun boards to become of, by, and for snowflakes and whiners?  And any post someone doesn't approve of is removed.  There is only one site I've ever really been active at, and so my frame of reference with respect to boards overall is limited.  Is it the ownership, the moderators, or just the members becoming whiners and mods shutting them up?

Or is it just that the snowflake generation is infiltrating gun boards, or are gun owners becoming wimps and whiners?  And I don't mean we should all sit around insulting each other.  I think most of you know what I mean.  Will snowflakism be practiced here?

What happened?  Is it like that at Arf.com and AK47.net?   When did it all change?

??? Have you ever met Eric? If you were on Glocktalk over 5 years ago then you know how he Mods (When he still owned it) and it aint that way. Like a good manager of a store, one single person at the top sets the tone for the site. I have been on a lot of forums and in comparison, Eric does a helluva good job.

So it's the ownership of one site and not like that everywhere?

At GT (my only frame of reference - joined in 2001) back in the day, you couldn't really disagree with the moderation.  There were some members who tried really hard to get banned and eventually did.  There were a couple mods over the years who seemed a little heavy handed, but overall it wasn't a bad direction, so to speak.

It seems like "Snowflakism" is becoming prevalent and I didn't know if it was happening everywhere.

Again, I have seen very good stores turn into very bad stores with the change of a single manager. I have seen corporations bankrupted with the wrong CEO. Eric sold the site 5-7 years ago and hasn't had final say since then. He has made a bad choice or two on moderators and learned from those mistakes (You won't see those guys moderating over here). The place needs to be interesting and fun, but as with all things there has to be limits. I can tell you he does not care for "lawyer ball" and for those who like to stay at the ragged edge of what is acceptable, they probably won't last long.

I once posted somewhere that I would like to see under Wonder Womans skirt, and it was so offensive it had to be removed.  That was literally it.  No vulgar language, no sexual innuendo, no pornographic pictures, no insults of other members, just the musing that I'd like to see under her skirt.  It had to be deleted it was so offensive.

You are entitled to your opinions. When I started GT, people were more civil and considerate, as a rule. Perhaps you should factor that in. If this is something you feel strongly about, you should start your own site and run it as you see fit. Perhaps you will have better luck than I have, over the last two decades. This stuff isn't as easy as it may look. Anyway, as I had occasion to point out to someone else recently, you get what you give, on sites like this and in life in general.

I don’t think anyone was anymore rough or thick skinned then than now.  And we weren’t just men, we were also civil.

I don’t necessarily believe everyone has become more sensitive.  I think we as a whole have become less civilized.

I was trying to avoid specifics, but I never had any issues with the way GT was moderated for the first decade more.  In times past, threads would get locked and the reason was obvious.  But rarely was the content actually deleted so it couldn't be seen.  Recently it changed from appropriate moderation due to a breach of the rules, to responding to a single complaint.  And now stuff that isn't even a breach of the rules is deleted, and just because somebody whined.  It's like the snowflakes are taking over.

I am going to take another run at this. Perception is a tricky bitch. What one person thinks is rude, isn't rude for the next guy. The next guy thinks that something off-color is perfectly acceptable, while three others think it is vulgar. One man's fun, is another man's definition of bad behavior. Where do we draw the line? Who gets to pick? I've learned that if I am doing the job properly, everyone is typically pissed at me.

I have learned a hell of a lot since the nineties, running sites like this. I am trying to apply that knowledge here and maybe build a better mousetrap. What I have very little control over is the general devolution of our society, over the last twenty years. I am not sure what I can do to reverse that tide, or even stem it. I am going to try to, at least on the pages of this site. I want this to be a polite, relaxed place to hang out, the way GT was in the early days. In order for that to work, everyone is going to have to help. That means that this place may not be the ideal square peg for everyone, but we all compromise a bit for the good of the community.

Really???? I think it would only be offensive if Rosie O'Donnell was wearing a Wonder Woman outfit.

If it was Rosie O, I wouldn't have made the remark.  All it takes is a couple snowflakes whining and the post gets deleted.  I don't know if I got an infraction, but it seemed silly to remove it for that.

I guess I'm the only one who would like to see under Wonder Woman's skirt.

It accomplishes nothing complaining about how things are done on other sites and I do not want TBS used for that purpose. If you have a problem with another site, please take it up with them.

I do not act because anyone whines about anything. I examine the situation and I make up my own mind. The way I run things hasn't changed one bit in twenty years, when I have had a free hand to run things as I saw fit. I will be as fair and evenhanded here as I can. I don't grease squeaky wheels, unless I agree with their squeaks. I won't please everyone, but I will do what I think is right every time.
