memories of childhood with a DAV vet for DAD

Recommended Posts

my dad was a British citizen (English)

in the early 40's anything that breathed got drafted.

after being injured,

He was in the hospital being processed for a disability retirement

when someone noticed he was not a citizen .

They asked, if he wanted to transfer to a British unit.

He said, not much point now.

anyway we were at an amusement park with a shooting gallery.

I guess I was 14. I was not doing very well.

He said , let me see that and proceeded to hit everything, spinning, moving or standing still.

I guess I was looking ,like what was that.

He said, I was in the Army I just don't like guns.

(that was in 1959) don't know why it came to mind now.

In the forties, My dad was a Canadian citizen going to college in the US, finishing up a degree in aeronautical engineering. When Canada entered the war he tried to join the Canadian army but they wanted him to continue his studies because they figured an aeronautical engineer would be more valuable to the war effort than a soldier.  He ended up joining the US Army Air force and gave his address in the college dorm in the US as his residence but after a while they figured out that he wasn't a citizen and they gave him the choice to become a US citizen or going back to Canada. He had come to love this country during his stay here and decided to become a citizen. He also said that he liked the idea of being a citizen rather than a subject.

He went through some kind of special training in Colorado where he met my mother. They kept in touch until the end of the war and were married in 1946. I was born in November of 1947.
