A man nearly struck a St. Paul squad car before he crashed into another vehicle, killing that driver, according to police.

Just before midnight Saturday, police were en-route to a domestic situation in the 800 block of Blair Avenue. They were told a woman’s boyfriend was fighting with her 14-year-old son and that the boyfriend had tried to stab the son with a machete, said Steve Linders, spokesman for the St. Paul Police Department.

The boyfriend, who police identified as Shawn Michael Konder, 26, of St. Paul, drove away from the house as police approached, nearly striking a squad car. He did not have the lights on his van turned on, Linders said.

Another officer reportedly saw Konder driving at a high rate of speed through the neighborhood and heard a crash.

Police arrived to find that Konder, who had a machete in his van, had crashed into another vehicle in the 800 block of Sherburne Avenue in the Frogtown neighborhood of St. Paul, Linders said.

Linders said it was unclear as to where the victim, who was in his car, was situated when the crash occurred. A garage at the scene was badly damaged.

The 41-year-old victim, whose name has not been released, was critically injured and was taken to Regions Hospital where he died, Linders said.

The suspect had gotten out of his van and attempted to flee on foot when he was apprehended by police.
