And So It Begins

Christmas threw up all over the house today. It's purdy, but early.  We have to do two more houses, so we start early. I'd rather wait, but no one ever comes over for any holidays, it is just us.

It makes LostWife happy, so it makes me happy. She said the whole time that she wasn't putting out much. Everything we do every year, except the formal dining setting, so it is all out. I think the table looks very nice with a runner and hurricane lamp.

Probably won't do outside, but that is still up for grabs.

Anyone else early starters?

Good for you, to do things that make her happy.

I gotta say, despite being a confirmed grinch, I think Christianity is a net benefit for humanity, irregardless of one's personal cosmology. I'd add "especially now, with things being so bad", but things are always bad, at least for somebody. :(

So if the message of Christmas makes things a little better for some folks then I can stand some decorations on stuff and carols in the background. At least it ain't pumpkin spice.

Ho-Ho! :reindeer:

We have 2 cats and 2 dogs in the house, and one of those dogs is a mastiff with a lethal tail.  I haven’t put up a Christmas tree in 6 years because of that.  I miss having a tree… so I’m working on a wall quilt that looks like a Christmas tree.  It’s only slightly smaller than a normal sized door.  If I get really motivated, I’ll hang the lightest, non-breakable ornaments I have from it, and see if I can get away with that.  Other than that, the only decorations will be bows on the junipers outside by the front door, and a crèche on one of the bookshelves taller than the dog’s tail reaches.  And a couple framed photos of my kids from 15-20 years ago, when they were little.
After I do that, my oldest daughter will complain it’s not Christmassy enough, and she will get out the ornament bin, and proceed to hang the ornaments from every light fixture in the house, tuck them on every bookshelf in every room, and after the holidays and their supposed cleanup, I will keep finding them all over probably until spring cleaning in April.

I don’t actually mind this at all.  But once the dogs are no longer with us, I’m going to have a real Christmas tree in house again, secured against the cats climbing it.

I’ve given up on trees lately. Back in the day I tied them into corners. Maybe the last time I’ve had a tree, it was a tiny one, prelit, fastened to the top of a bookcase. When one of the cats pulled out and swallowed a lightbulb thus darkening the tree.

Yep, and I like it, just think is a little early. The Wal-Mart has had decorations out for some time now. It was Hallo-Thanks-Mas for a while.

Eric will start up the snow here soon (ish) and it will be official.  :menorah:  and :tree:.

Which ever you celebrate, I hope it is grand!

Hope she isn't this exuberant!

I spent 8 years stationed in Israel. We were "home" for 7 of them. My adopted family celebrated both, perhaps for my benefit but they would never admit it to me. The holiday didn't matter, ours or theirs, we were not to spend it alone on base.

Wonderful people and I miss them.

When I was a kid the Jewish people didn't celebrate Christmas but did buy presents for their children because all the other kids they knew got presents for Christmas and their parents didn't want them to feel left out.  I thought that was nice.

That message has been totally nonexistent for a long time.

In fact,  this year they seemed to have just skipped the overt spend-spend-spend commercials and plenty have started "controlled debt" messaging.  You can safely go into debt with them monitoring and overseeing your progress.

NOW YOU CAN GO SPEND! SPEND! SPEND!

It's a great idea.

Your shelf has no elf?

If I recall, and it was a long time ago, didn't small Whitman Sample boxes come with an elf holding it?

I still buy a Whitman's Sampler every Christmas.

It is a important part of my past.

Sadly, the candies are getting smaller and smaller, fewer and fewer in each layer.

I hope that they will be around as long as I am.

The kids were long gone and grandchildren had outgrown the elf before it became popular. No elf here. Just a grumpy old man with a pretty wife.

Been a long time for me having a Whitman's Sampler. They were good IIRC.

Our family tradition was Fanny Farmer candies.  Till they got so expensive you damn near had to get a bank loan for a box.  Alas, no more.
