Walt Longmire
Number 42. 22 with a bow, 20 with a firearm. Today was with an old .270 I bought way back in 1975. Started out stalking a large bull we were trying to determine if it was legal. Needs to be 50" wide or have 3 brow tines on one side. I'm all over him in the woods but couldn't get everything right when I spot another animal. This one was obviously legal. I nailed it in the head but missed the brain shooting offhand at 100 yards. My son then whacked it with a Ruger in .350 magnum he got from my brother. We were quite a distance from any road by then. We flagged a trail to a mud road. Went back with the 4 wheeler and managed to drag it to where we could access with the pickup. Winched it into the back of the truck whole. Back to the shop. Skinned and ready for butchering. Chowed down fresh tenderloin tonight. Happy camper. Life is good.

Most of my latest firearm moose have been by .458, .416, and .375 H&H. I like to mix it up.

I think many of them realize what's likely to happen, so they just give themselves up. Or maybe they don't want to spend another winter outside and want me to bring them in and 'warm them up.'

I was packing my .270 with 130 grain bullets, not my .375 with 300 grain Barnes X bullets or the .416 with 400's. The second moose was almost straight away and close. He took one to the back of the head. I don't like wasting meat. With a firearm I often take a neck shot. With my bow it's right through the lungs. BTW, our Alaska Yukon moose are gigantic compared to Maine moose.

Paul53
As you know, moose are notoriously near sighted. Ifn he's head on, grab a branch and hold it behind your head. I'm hoping he wont feel threatened, and I'm not sure if he'll turn the tables and want to mount you! Hopefully it'll allow you to get closer if needed, then put him out of his moosery (sorry).
Walt Longmire
Been eating Tenderloin every day since the 5th. Pretty hard to take. When I was moving stuff around in the freezer to put the new meat in, I found one last package from 2021. It was Tenderloin. Lucky me. Had that for lunch yesterday. Tonight I'll have something else. Moose burger cooked up for burritos.
Paul53
Can a moose fit in an F-35B? B for Bullwinkle. He was always jealous of Rocky the flying squirrel!

Can't say, but the largest bulls will not completely fit in an 8' pickup bed even with the tailgate down. I hauled one home whole with the head against the headache rack, hindquarters were on the tailgate, and the rear feet were dragging on the road.
