The kid gets a real job, woohoo!

So my youngest daughter just got hired full-time at the oil /gas/water well servicing company.  She thinks the boss was a little bemused that a girl wanted to do that sort of work... and she'll be the only girl in a 43 man shop.  The boss told her that in the 50+ years the place has been in business, there have only been two other women work there (outside the office) - one was his sister and the other his floor manager's wife.  She doesn't understand why most people don't want to work outside in the winter, because she spends her time slogging through the pasture and doing farm chores here in all weather, and she likes it.   I think he felt better when she told him she was a farm kid and didn't mind weather.  It's her first full time job (she's 19, and has been working part time at a small engine repair place for the last 3 1/2 years).  She was pleased at the pay rate... but her dad told her to wait until she met Mr.FICA to be that happy about that, lol.  She's sad she won't be able to do her part time job except on Saturdays anymore, though, because she loves her boss there.  And she says she'll have to make knitting dates now with his wife (the Mrs taught her to knit a couple years ago, and they get together 3 times a week to knit together after her shift in the shop.  Basically, her boss and his wife have spoiled her as the grand daughter they never had - all their grand kids are boys.  I hope she likes her new workmates this much...

Anyway, she reminds me now and then that not all of whatever we're calling the post-millennial kids are a waste of oxygen, and do actually have a work ethic.

Lots of kids know how to work. Far too few but some do. Those that do (I’m including my kids) do really well for themselves. Those that don’t have problems making it without handouts.

It is sad seeing the Everybody Wins generations suffering because they just can’t work. Because they were never taught how or were taught to never try or take risks because they might fail.

Congratulations.

So true. The percentages of kids graduating school these days that have NEVER worked is dumbfounding. Even more couldn't start a lawn mower or change the oil or a tire on a vehicle. It's sad. BUT the ones who can are light years ahead of their so called peers.

Good for her, hope she has a great experience.  Lot's dads don't show their sons squat.  I have a 16 year old grandson that loves to come out and work with me and his older brother.  His dad is one of those that thinks he is kool and don't hold a job half the time.  He eats it up when one us show him how maintain a chainsaw or run the wood splitter.  At first I was careful and really kept an eye on him but now I pretty much trust him with anything we show him.  Have to give him credit, if he's not sure he asks.

You did a good job of raising that girl and you've made the world a better place in doing so.

After 15 years of gradually losing people (and we're all old), they hired two new guys.  Maybe I won't have to work 50 / 60 hours per week now. Right?

I worked a week with the one guy.  He just got out of the Navy (mid 20's?).  He's a very nice guy and easy to work with.  He's got the technical background.

But he had his phone 1' from his face, 100% of the time.

An hour commute on the first day.  Not a peep out of him.  I pretty much just gave up on showing him anything,  and just did all the work.  Even when we were talking to the customer managers at the start and end of the day.  100% phone.

I don't think he was watching movies.  A lot of it sounded like japanese cartoons, as far as I could tell.
