...Reynolds’ presentation says that between the 2016 and 2022 fiscal years, the Air Force will conduct demonstrations of no less than seven different weapon systems, including various nuclear-capable strategic types, on the B-52, also known affectionately as the BUFF, for Big Ugly Fat Fellow. Of these, four are in-development hypersonic weapons. Broadly speaking, hypersonic weapons encompass unpowered and powered vehicles that fly at more than five times the speed of sound, or Mach 5...

Umm, that's not precisely what BUFF stands for.

Long Live the BUFF!

I have a history with these planes and have fond memories of it. My first duty station in the Air Force was at a SAC base and my job was running the backup generators on the base but not for the aircraft, but some of our generators were near the flight line and I had a friend who worked on the B52's and his job was avionics and I got to go aboard the planes a couple of times.

I had some interesting TDY assignments when I was with SAC working for the Radar Bombing Squadron running the generators for the radar aboard a train that traveled to different latitudes in both north and south America. I was in two different locations. One was just outside of Beaver Utah and the other was in Alberta Canada near Calgary just on the outskirts of Dinosaur national park. My quarters consisted of a berth on the train which was real cozy with a bed next to a big picture window.

Part of my off duty time was looking for little fossils and there were millions of tiny fossils on the ground everywhere. I had a nice collection of them which I eventually lost. But most of my off duty time was getting to know the small town girls who seemed to be fascinated with American servicemen. Just about everybody on the train got laid, at least most of the single guys like me, but a couple of the married guys, too.
