What do y'all think about pepper spray?

I hear that a gel is a good option.  I stay away from the really small containers because I figure it's possible to screw up and miss with your first attempt.

It's all theoretical, but I've seen a guy that was pepper sprayed.  He sat on the step of a firetruck for an hour puking his guts out while the firemen periodically poured water over his head.

It seems to be a viable choice for when you really can't carry or don't want deal with the hassle (yeah, I know...)

Anyone want to recommend a pepper spray option?

Thanks!

Like any other weapon or tool you have to keep in mind the limitations.  Some drugged out or crazy individuals it won't stop. Also who else is around.  Policy with the SO was not to spray with infants or young children in the area(possibly toddlers it has been a few years).  But in some circumstances it is a valid option.

I've been pepper sprayed twice. It certainly hurts like hell, but I was still able to somewhat function afterwards. I could still hit a punching bag and walk around, after I pryed one of my eyes open. I was able to recover in only a few minutes due to large buckets of water, baby shampoo, cooling fans, etc. (this was for training)

It's better than nothing, and you can use it in a lot of non-lethal confrontations where you can't really use a gun.

I keep a can in the car door pocket.  I wonder how long the aerosol pressure remains?

Don't go for the smallest, cheapest thing possible. As with most things you get what you pay for. I also think you should buy two, one for carry, and one for practice. Amazon has the Kimber pepper blaster for $37 dollars each or 3 for $88. That way you have one to actually shoot and see where it hits, and one to carry, and one spare.

Getcha one of those auto tasers. Small and effective. Deploy, drop and go. 30 seconds of being hooked to a live wire takes the wind out of most folks.

File a police report about the deployment, and most of the companies that sell them will send a replacement. Not as cheap, but much more effective and reliable.

Pepper spray doesn't work nearly as well as most think, and it can come back to see you, deploy it on yourself, and a host of other things I've seen over the years.

Less than lethal is optimal, but remember that most who use that kind of thing have an armed backup, and use it as an insurance policy.

Something like this. Taser

I get Saber Red (the internet wouldn't lie, would it?)  in small / medium / large.

It's got an expiration date on it. (2 or three years)

If you throw one of the keyring ones in a fire,  you won't have mosquitoes for that night.

I have used bear spray on aggressive dogs several times. Even a slight breeze will bring the cloud right back to you.

^ This. We were required to carry S&W Mace back in the day. Then when OC spray became popular we switched to that. I wore mine for inspection but relied on my black jack or coca bolo night stick for compliance issues. Now retired I have a small Sabre pepper spray handy. tom.

Fox is very powerful stuff.  I would go with a gel or stream over a mist to prevent blowback.  Training exposure is a good idea so you can learn about the effects.  You don't need a face full..., just enough to get the idea of the burning and throat constricting effects.

Having it is great.  Having it in your hand because you are situationally aware enough to see danger approaching is what saves you.

If you have any breathing or other health issues yourself, I would take that into account before you start carrying products like this. Inhaling a bit of pepper spray is a really unpleasant experience, but doing so with some medical issues could be dangerous. You should assume that if you have to use the spray, you may catch a little of it yourself.

Keep in mind that chemical deterrents, such as pepper spray, are one rung on the ladder of escalation.

There are more rungs, up to lethal force, so have a plan on how to react if Mister Goblin isn't impressed by your pepper spray.

If you don't have a sidearm, hold the pepper spray in one hand, your knife in the other.

You do carry a knife, don't you?

Many a girl discovered this the hard way back in the 1960s.

I was a TA for freshman chemistry labs back in college.

First rule that was ignored, hot glass and cold glass look the same.

Second rule that was often ignored, open volatile reagents under the hood and leave them there.

Sure enough some dope would haul out the bottle of fairly strong nitric acid (600 mg/l) and within a few minutes, all of the girl's nylon stockings began to melt.

We never used really dangerous reagents in that class.

Third rule that was ignored, yes, we are all impressed by how high you can stack your glassware, followed by, sweep it up and, yes, you have to pay for it.

Check with the wife, Or someone "else's"?????:cheerleader:

I just checked.

You can still buy Aqua Net.

Started by a  Minnesota company, now owned by a giant conglomerate.

I swear that my sister kept the company in business in the 1960s.
