Cougar_ml
Long story short, government surplus rifle storage crates weren't empty when they were sold off. My biggest issue with the article is those are clearly M16A2 rifles, which have a 3 round burst setting, but are NOT "fully automatic" https://www.foxcarolina.com/2022/09/27/box-m16-weapons-shipped-couples-home/?fbclid=IwAR2pCnbZw1Hc5DA8YxmG51MltpqeQGdB248HWl99Jl96PfYjLbvxi1cQxN4

Cougar_ml
had a minor disagreement with someone about whether they are fully automatic or not. They said anything that fires more than one shot per pull of the trigger is fully automatic. I said that anything that fires more than one shot per pull of the trigger is automatic, and that to be fully automatic means there are no limitations to how many shots get fired per pull of the trigger, where the M16A2 is only capable of 3 round burst, so therefore is "automatic" but not "fully automatic"

If there is an action that mechanically happens automatically to eject a spent shell casing and chamber a fresh round, it's an automatic weapon. There are no degrees of automatic. 2
minderasr
You mean they're not fully semi-automatic? 1

The almost never used correct terminology is “auto loading”

There are no degrees of automatic. select fire means there are options to switch between different modes of operation. It would pretty much have to be some type of automatic firearm in order to have select fire capability. Machine guns commonly don't have any option other than continuous firing per function of the trigger, so there is nothing to select.

It’s incredible,” said retired Houston police captain and former Marine Greg Fremin. “It’s unbelievable to think weapons of that grade, military-grade weapons, would be shipped in containers would be shipped across state lines and somebody have access to that. It’s pretty shocking,”
