my cousin's dog got shot during one hunting season.

First issue, it was wearing an orange vest.

Second issue, it was on private property

Third issue, there aren't any wolves in this area, and no hunting for them.

It's the hunting for me. Taking a game animal (for meat) is a bit of a let down.

Don't believe everything you read. She did nothing wrong. They should be mad at the person who dumped over a dozen dogs in the wilderness.

BTW, there are wolf mutts being bred all over the PNW. Some of them are the meanest critters you can ever have the misfortune of meeting, even the real wolves won't let them join the pack.

I read the dogs were all sick and diseased and going to die anyway. She claims the one she shot was chasing a deer.

Was on a lease and there were a few animals walking around with safety orange paint. "MULE' and "Horse" . Land owner had had problems.

Told him we knew the difference, but his circus, his rules. We took a day and helped him dress them up the next few years., Good guy.

I went on a deprivation hunt about 1983. Sheep and lambs were being slaughtered. Almost all the lambs were gone. A few calf’s as well. Devastating for the ranchers.

We thought it was coyotes. Turned out to be wild dogs. Mostly secondary generations of dogs thrown out into the Utah desert. Most were sick including rabies and had been starving. After killing enough lambs to eat well, they just went on a killing spree for fun.

They had started out as pets but after a couple generations if inbreeding they started to look like those generic street dogs you see from Cairo to Hanoi. Yellow, flat hair, curled tail, 30-40 pounds. It was sickening. We killed every one we could. The rest were killed with poison bait. The state put them in a pit and burned them. Then covered it with dirt.

We all wished we could have found the original owners who dumped them. You don’t dump a house dog in the western desert and expect it will be just fine hunting down jack rabbits. Cruel bastards needed hurting.

In Minnesota it's legal to kill a dog that's harassing and killing deer.

My dog only goes out into my back yard.  Even so, I watch her at night with a .45 on my hip.  No one, nothing,  f""ks with my dog.  She's my responsibility and I take that seriously.

to expand on the second issue, the private property was inside a fenced cow field, and within sight of the house.

Sure, the dog was a wolf cross, but it didn't deserve to be shot by 4 teenagers.

 

My cousin apparently ran into the house, grabbed a pistol, and shot it at them.  Didn't hit any, but they ran off so I think they got the idea that they shouldn't be there.

The dog in question is absolutely 100% Husky, and anyone should be able to see that. That she would mistake it for a wolf says a lot about her outdoor experience.

I know, owned huskies most of my adult life, would have had them sooner but my mom likes ugly dogs and wouldn't let me get one.

Those pictures are taken from a few feet away clearly showing the head, so it's easy for us to know it's a husky. I still don't think she did anything wrong or illegal. Stupid maybe, but that was posting it online after she realized she made a mistake.

She reminds me of the joke where the woman elk hunter shoots a guys horse. She insists it's an elk and she is keeping it. He says he wants to get his saddle off her 'elk'

At a distance, fading light, in the woods, the animal is being hyper-aggressive.....no way to differentiate. Nor should she be waiting for it to attack her to find out. 

I think for some here, their love of dogs is overriding their common-sense.
