Silentpoet
I hadn't stick welded since May I think. I decided to do a little practice and play around tonight. This ain't perfect, but pretty decent all things considered. The joint is kinda ugly, but it is a real solid weld. I used some 1/16th inch 6013 electrodes from Harbor Freight so they probably aren't the best. Ran at 15 amps. Maintaining an arc and not blowing it out with too long an arc was a challenge.

Walt Longmire
Working oilfield with lots of talented welders it was always impressive to watch someone TIG weld 2 aluminum cans to each other.

I can tack them, but can't get a full bead on them. But it has been a while since I have tried.
Silentpoet
Picked up some Forney and Lincoln 1/16th 6013 rods to try some more at both box cutter and maybe razor blades. I am hoping with the better rods maybe razor blades will be doable. But I also want to work on cans.
Fog
Welded some aluminum foil once to show off that I could. TIG

TIG I am not sure if my welder would get that low. I might be able to turn the pulse settings way up to minimize the heat but it bottoms out at 10 amps. I am thinking it might do cans, if I can do my part, but I think foil would be too thin. But I would like to try at some point.
janice6
Best I could do was years ago, when I had some 20 mill thick Titanium tubing one inch in diameter. I could lay a tig bead on it 1/16 inch wide. That stuff welded so pretty with 5 amps. I don't do enough anymore to be proficient, but I get the job done. These days my 145 Amp pulsed MiG gets more work than the tig. I can't stick weld to save my ass. I like tig cause it's so much like the gas welding I learned on.
Hook
Welding has always intrigued me. Would love to learn to do it.
Cecil56
Have not welded in years, but I used to do OK. Give me a torch and a stick of bronze rod, and I can still put out a masterpiece. Buddy's still call if they need some brazing done.

Trick I used was to clamp two pieces of foil together between two copper bars, sticking out I think it was around 3/32" Then just run the arc down the edge that sticks up really fast. Unclamp the copper bars and viola!
geeorge
Decent work. I gave up my stick welder when I bought my first MIG welder. I do still have an oxy/acl set up mostly used for heating stuff up , buy nothing sticks better to a rusty exhaust pipe better than oxy/acl welding. I learned on it to back in the 1970's. My MIG get the most use though
railfancwb
One of my late uncles was a career welder at one of “the plants” in Oak Ridge. Late in his career he went around to various parts of the world inspecting nuclear power plant welds before the plants came on line and teaching local crews how to do it. Unfortunately none of those skills are in my portfolio. 1

Quite a history there both during their prime and now. Visited their first reactor in town. Fascinating. Talked with one of their researchers that had developed a very fine filter that could separate gases. Wondered if he had the patent on the gas separator that is used to supply portable Oxygen for people that needed it........... Remember: "Don't touch the Water!".
