The Social Media society sucks.

A friend just got turned down for a great job in the financial sector because she has no publicity viewable social media. She has an account with a family great just to stay in touch with extended family. Other than that, nothing.

She is retired military. She worked in an admin job dealing with inventory and logistics. She was HIGHLY encouraged to stay away from social media.

The military helped her get the requisite certifications for the banking and financial sectors as part of her transition to civilian life

Because of no social media for employers to dig through no one will hire her in a high security field. The financial jobs she is looking for require the same logistical and security skills she used in the military. But because she is secure in her personal and professional life she can’t get a job being secure with other peoples money and information.

Insanity.

That's BS

When I am looking at people for jobs with, uh, sensitive requirements, I love people with no social media.

It tells me two things, one is they will actually work, and the second is they don't have an emotional need to be telling other people things for affirmation.

Third advantage, for some positions anyway, is they won't post something that creates a mess I have to clean up for some stupid reason.

On one level I sort of get it. She can’t talk in detail about her last 30 years and his no electronic life to dig through so to HR she is a ghost. But someone out there has got to have the sense to stay through that. She has .gov offers but she will make more money on the private sector.

Thinking about this more and I wonder if the no social media thing is an excuse. Maybe they have someone else they want to hire, but this person is not as qualified, so they make up a BS reason to get the better candidate out of the way of who they really want to hire.

So, lemme get this straight.

Since the dawn of mankind up until about 20 years ago, no human being was ever hired to do a job that they were qualified for because the prospective employer couldn't inspect their social media postings.

This sounds more to me like  some useless, idiot MBA conjured up a policy for hiring that allowed no deviation or said useless MBA's pet theories might be proven -- useless.

Best of luck to your friend, amigo.

Social media is actually a great tool to weed out the bad apples before hiring them.  So many people who use it just can't help themselves but to spill the beans about everything going on in their lives.  Not only does an employer want someone who's qualified for the job, but they don't want someone who's gonna make the company look bad on social media.

On the flip side of this coin...  In NY a new law was passed that requires applicants for CCW permits to provide ALL social media accounts going back three years.  So our state overlords can determine if we are of good moral character.

What if one doesn’t have social media accounts?

My company is a teeny-tiny cog in a gigantic machine.

I don't know about the other divisions,  but we don't even really have a HR department any more.  We have a website.

And it's main accomplishment seems to be mailing us notifications about obscure, but widely heralded, named "days".

I dont have any social media unless this place counts and the chive. Guy i used to work with has it. I guess people put where they work on there. He thought it would be smart to post some racist stuff on there after the floyd thing. Claims it was cause he was still under anesthesia. What a nightmare all the calls we got calling us racists. i was told by the big boss that if i mentioned the company name on social media he would can me and anyone else. He had the IT guy block guns sites and porn as well. Ol rick was found to be watching like five hours of porn a day in his office.

Sounds like he could be a problem.  I couldn't use the Internet or my phone for anything casual and personal that wasn't necessary, while at work.  I don't know why, I just thought that they bought my time and deserved what they were paying for.  The company was pretty good about stuff like that though.

I just couldn't screw around on the Internet at work.  I used it for necessary research, but nothing else.  I walked though an Engineering department once on my way to a meeting, and I bet out of the whole department there must have been 100 Engineers playing card games on their computers..........  We had 5,000 people in that plant.

I didn't think the company was my life, but I did think that they bought my time.  It just seemed right for me.

So, let me get this straight.  If someone has a social media account where they post pictures of their pets and an occasional image of what they had for a meal with typically inane comments like, "Nom Nom Nom," they actually have a better chance of finding a job than someone who has the sense not to have a social media account?

Lemmings.

In my opinion social media is not good for you.

I don't use social media, with the exception of my interest in firearms and people that share that interest in this forum.

That said, I don't feel that I need the approval or judgement of other people.  I simply don't need that.  I set my own goals for myself very early in my life and I met those goals.  I have nothing to apologize for and I need no one to correct my attitude.  Getting this way has been my lifetime endeavor.

I have spent my life making me into what I wanted to be, I have no desire, nor need, to get others approval or acceptance.  I made my life worth something to me, and I made contributions that I believe help society.  I don't believe I'm better than anyone else, but I'm comfortable knowing that I tried to do my best.

If others don't agree, or want proof, piss on them.  Maybe this is why social media and I don't get along.

That's what I keep saying.  All my social media accounts were lost in a tragic boating accident.

Yes, forums are a form of social media.
