Do men, or women, like this exist anymore?

One man's words.

Patriotism means to stand by the country. It does not mean to stand by the president.

This country will not be a good place for any of us to live in unless we make it a good place for all of us to live in.

Knowing what's right doesn't mean much unless you do what's right.

A nation that still needs to distinguish between stealing an election, and stealing a new pair of shoes, is not completely civilized yet.

No man who is not willing to bear arms and to fight for his rights can give a good reason why he should be entitled to the privilege of living in a free community.

The only man who makes no mistakes is the man who never does anything. Do not be afraid to make mistakes providing you do not make the same one twice.

Behind the ostensible government sits enthroned an invisible government owing no allegiance and acknowledging no responsibility to the people. To destroy this invisible government, to befoul the unholy alliance between corrupt business and corrupt politics is the first task of the statesmanship of today.

And my favorite quote:

It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood; who strives valiantly; . . . who at best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement, and who at worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly.

All of the above were either written or spoken by Theodore Roosevelt a hundred years ago.  Back then, they had at least one decent man willing to both lead and inspire.

I believe that were he around today, he would be disgusted with how we have spoiled, corrupted, ignored and surrendered what he believed was the inherent goodness and decency of those that we still refer to as: the people.

And were he to return today, we do not deserve him.

One more of his remarks:

In any moment of decision, the best thing you can do is the right thing, the next best thing is the wrong thing, and the worst thing you can do is nothing.

Another pretty smart fellow:

There is no limit to the amount of good you can do if you don't care who gets the credit.

Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction. We didn't pass it to our children in the bloodstream. It must be fought for, protected, and handed on for them to do the same.

Either you will control your government, or government will control you.

One of the traditional methods of imposing statism or socialism on a people has been by way of medicine.

A nation that cannot control its borders is not a nation.

If some among you fear taking a stand because you are afraid of reprisals from customers, clients, or even government, recognize that you are just feeding the crocodile hoping he'll eat you last.

Many a man has failed because he had his wishbone where his backbone should have been.

Two of my favorites:

We must never remain silent in the face of bigotry. We must condemn those who seek to divide us. In all quarters and at all times, we must teach tolerance and denounce racism, anti-Semitism and all ethnic or religious bigotry wherever they exist as unacceptable evils. We have no place for haters in America -- none, whatsoever.

We can't help everyone, but everyone can help someone.

 

Spoken or written by Ronald Reagan.  More our contemporary than Theodore Roosevelt, but almost the same man in spirit, conviction and wisdom.

I suggest that he, too, would be disgusted with how we have destroyed what he worked so hard to give us.

But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security.

Much wisdom in that document..

And, considering that the authors risked death at the hands of their oppressors and not fear of being cancelled or deemed a fascist on CNN, much courage as well.

If it ain't true, don't say it.

If it ain't yours, don't take it.

If it ain't right, don't do it.

Hardly as flamboyant as Roosevelt or Reagan, but along the lines and has worked for me, although the saying the truth ahs kept me in a lot of trouble. For some reason, people don't like hearing that.

Being a decent, honest, compassionate human being requires very little effort.

Lying, cheating and cruelty is hard work.

 

As I used to tell various bosses over the years after I had made a mistake:  If I were perfect, you couldn't afford me.  :biggrin:
