My First Glock Purchase Was A...

I bought my first Glock in 1995. It was a used Gen II G-22. The guy I bought it from bore a strong resemblance to Keefer Sutherland and he pretty obviously went to some effort to cultivate the look. The only thing that threw off the effect was a seriously wandering right eye. Poor bastard. His mullet was perfect though.

Anyway, the gun was used, but in good condition it shot dependably and with decent accuracy, once I got used to the trigger. The first few magazines down range were humbling, as I imagine they are to most first-time Glock shooters. Those triggers take some getting used to.

A couple of years later, I sold the G-22 to my BIL, so I could buy the new G-27. I don't know why I had to have it. I didn't carry concealed yet back then. It was a harder pistol to be accurate with and with less capacity than the G-22 I sold. I regretted that deal later, once the New wore off the G-27.

That purchase played a part in changing my life though. At about the same time I bought the G-27, some other things of note were happening in my life. I was injured at work and off work for a while. I had just stopped smoking and had a ton of nervous energy to work through. And I had just gotten my first Internet-capable computer and got online for the first time.

So there I was, online, with plenty of time and energy and a new outlet for my interest in my new pistol. I started searching the web for info on Glocks. The Internet was pretty primitive back then and there wasn't a huge amount of content available.

I found a couple of sites about Glocks that had message boards on them. One of them was the Alien Glocker website. Anyone remember that one? Anyway, there was no such thing as message board websites back then. Websites were mostly static pages. Some had scripts like guestbooks (Remember those?) and message boards running as adjuncts. To me though, the message board was where it was at. I didn't want to build a static page website. I just wanted the good stuff.

So, I built Glock Talk. I didn't know how to do anything needed to build and run a site, so I taught myself how to build, set up and run a Linux server. I taught myself HTML and how to program in several languages. I taught myself how to do graphics. I had a lot of time on my hands and the time I spent learning everything back then is probably the most fulfilling time of my life, in retrospect. I wish I had known how much fun learning was, when I was still in school.

Glock Talk went rapidly through a variety of looks and formats, in the first year or two. It embarrasses me to look back on some of the early efforts, but they lead to something better. By 1998, the site was gaining momentum. At the end of 1998, The Alien Glocker website closed its doors. They posted a fairly snippy flounce message about Glock Talk encroaching on their traffic, but then they included a link to Glock Talk, at the bottom. They ceded their traffic to GT. I never understood what motivated them to do that, but I was grateful.

The rest, as they say, is history.

 

So, that is my First Glock story. What is yours?

I would never pay for a Glock except maybe with Monopoly money.  However, I do love always remembering the first gun I ever shot underwater which was a G26 back when I was 12.  Recoil was larger than normal.  Muzzle report sounded really funny.  And contrary to what you see in Hollywood, the bullet literally traveled maybe 5 feet before stopping.  Anyways, what made that day memorable was how much I was rushing around trying to get things cleaned up.  Water dripping all over the house.  Me trying to gather up the bullet fragments off the pool floor and the filter.  Having to find the exact round replacements for the magazine.  Used a combination of a hair dryer and a leaf blower to dry the gun.  All that managed to get done within like 10 or 20 minutes of my parents getting home. 

And for anyone who knows me from other gun forums who remembers my bucket list and how I had a G18 on it even though I am not a fan of full autos, well it's no longer on the list.  Got to shoot one a few years ago and what a waste it was.  It literally is a useless gun that you would give to someone to shoot on the range as a joke and have them try to hit ANYTHING consistently.  And yeah, tried it with and without the stock.  Only positive thing about that day was I got to remove an MP5 from that same list, so hopefully I am fully done with full autos.  I don't want them banned obviously, they're just not fun at all to shoot.

This is me (Legally) firing a Glock 21 full-auto! Four rounds of brass in the air and the pistol is level on target, steady as a rock. That was a sweet shooter. The .45acp's recoil impulse was tailor-made for full auto fire.

The first Glock I ever shot was a Glock 17 in 1998 following the famous North Hollywood bank shootout. I lived just a few blocks from that bank and was away from home that day but my next door neighbor as barricaded in his home with no gun while the neighborhood was closed off and the suspects were still at large.

That freaked him out and he knew that I had guns so I went to the local gun shop with him to pick one out and while I favored 1911's he liked the Glock 17 and bought onethat day and when he picked it up he had me go to the range with him to show him how to use it and I also took my Lightweight commander to show him that. He was happy with the Glock but I much preferred my Commander and didn't really like the size and the shape and the balance and the feel of the Glock 17, but I did like the basic simplicity of the gun and the ammo capacity and the fact that it seemed very reliable with differet kinds of ammo even with a new shooter not always gripping it properly.

But a couple of years later I moved out of California back to America and kind of liked the new 10mm cartridge and was interested in a 10mm Glock but hadn't had a chance to look at one, but did get a chance to see a Glock 19 and I liked it so much better than the Glock 17 that I bought one and that was my first Glock but I soon traded it for a Glock 23 which was the same basic gun but chambered in a caliber that began with the number 4 instead of the number 3 and had ballistics a lot closer to the 45 than it did to the 9 nut was about the same size as my Commander but lighter weight and held more ammo.

I eventually did get a Glock 20 in 10mm but it was a Gen 3 G20C and then I got to handle a G20 SF and the frame fit my hand so much better that I sold the almost new G20c for  good price and bought a new G20SF.

Used Glock 27 from my usual LGS. Actually first gun I had bought in a fair number of years. Has laser sight in the recoil spring guide, some sort of grip tape, and came with a barrel in 357 Sig. Bought couple boxes 357 Sig ammo, misplaced the barrel, thus only shot the 40 barrel. Gun shoots well enough to make me look better than I am.

Mine was a then-new Gen3 Glock 23. This would’ve been in the fall of 1999. Put a lot of ammo thru that pistol and traded it off before picking up another 23 (Gen2) that my father now has.

My first Glock was a Gen 2 G21 followed by a G30. Even though I have smaller hands I was able to shoot the G21 accurately. Those first two Glocks started a 27 year long affair with Glock pistols to include competition in IDPA and GSSF. My wife and I have competed in GSSF for 25 years , have both made Master and between the two of us won 23 of our 40 Glock pistols. Over the years we have owned almost all the Glock pistol models with the exception of the G18 , G 24 , G25 and G 28 and a few of the C-model Glocks.

My first Glock purchase was a used G30 that I rescued from a criminal's straw purchase.

It was approx. 1994 at a gun show in Richmond VA and I was debating between this used G30 and a new Republic Arms Patriot in .45 acp which got good reviews at the time.

I was going up and back between the two tables, and as I fondled the used Glock I noticed a very out-of-place looking young black girl who wasn't looking to either the right or the left, just straight past me at the dealer and then she asked him "gotta Glock 30?" without noticing that the only Glock on his table was right in front of her in my hands. She was obviously sent in to complete a purchase, not to shop for guns.

I decided $380 was a fair price for this used Glock with one 9 round mag and nothing else; no box, no manual, no nothing but a receipt from the FFL.  He filled me in on what happened before I arrived; a young black man who looked like a gangsta tried to buy it but got turned down by the NICS check, then he left and obviously sent in this girl with cash to finish the sale, but she was just a little too late.

Now that G30 is my primary nightstand pistol, with several 10 and 13 round mags, I never found another 9 round mag for sale. And none of these mags are happy to hold a full load, my G30 prefers that I download each mag by one. I remain pleased by it's accuracy and recoil mitigation but I soon bought new G17 and G26 for training and concealed carry, followed by a variety of other Glocks.  I joined GT in 2000 to reply to the original mall ninja.

I know I'm not the only one who trains with a service size pistol but carries a subcompact. Not a best practice but everyone in class does it.

My first Glock was a Generation 2 Glock 21 which I purchased in the mid 90's.  At first, the trigger took a little getting used to.  On occasion, I would swear that it felt like it stacked.  Other times the pull felt long.  But one thing was consistent, my groups were all low and to the left.  I simply learned to aim a little high and to the right and my rounds hit the center of the target. 

Somewhere along the line, I learned to ride the reset of the sear and my groups began to hit the center of the target without me compensating.  My next Glock was a generation 3 Glock 34 and I really liked the minus connector that it came with.   And soon after, I began to actually like the Glock trigger and no longer feel like it creeps or stacks and I no longer feel the need to ride the reset.

Once I got my Glock 26, all of the other subcompacts that I used to take to the range were relegated to the back of my safe and the little baby Glock got all my subcompact range time (until I got a Glock 29).

Now, I have numerous Glocks and my original Glock 21 has been given a grip reduction.  I feel like I've gone full circle with full size, and compact size for all the calibers I have.  It sort of feels like a family with all the big ones and little ones (sibling rivalries and all).

Glock 22 i think it was about 92,93.

i never shot 9 MM very well with two exceptions, i was used to ,45 ACP and .357.

i shot .40 Smith and immediately liked it.

still have a Gen2 G22.

Gen 1 G17. Third owner. Came with a log book. Over 100,000 rounds fired.

Second owner was a police academy.

First owner was the US Department of Defense. It was as part of a lot they ordered for testing.

I shot it a lot then did my own test. Ran it through a dishwasher. Guys on GT called me out for giving all my children lead poisoning for using the dishwasher. Then fired a couple thousand rounds bone dry. No failures.

Then drenched it in oil and fired another few thousand rounds as the oil filled up with dirt. No failures.

I purchased my first Glock in 2002.  I had been a gun owner/shooter since I was a kid but it was my first plastic fantastic.  Glock 17.  Still have it.  Over the years I added a 21, 35 and a 43.  All of those got traded for something else.

After I bought my 17 I started surfing the net looking for Glock content when I ran across GT.  

That was in 2002.  

This year will be my 20th on that site you built Eric.  Its been entertaining, informative, and a blast.

Gen 4 G20

My wife (now ex wife) wanted to go to Vegas on a girls trip.  So I bought a gun.

been carrying it every day ever since, so that's about 7 or 8 years now I think.

Only has a couple thousand rounds through it at most; I haven't really kept track.

The first Glock I ever handled and fired was a 2nd gen 22 that my uncle had bought and ended up giving to my grandfather because he didn't like it. It changed my opinion of "plastic" guns. Some years later, I purchased a 3rd gen 27 that is still my primary carry gun. I've since bought other guns that I think are far more ergonomic. But that 27 just shoots well for me. I occasionally nag my grandfather about selling me that 2nd gen 22.
