Books and other media and libraries and copyright

I know libraries have different criteria for collection acquisition, retention, and removal based on the market served. The public library in my rural community works differently than the one in a nearby metropolitan area. Public libraries work differently than university libraries which in turn differ according to university specialties.

Does any library - even the Library of Congress - attempt to retain copies of all works? I doubt it.

How many older but still worthwhile titles gradually disappear because they are not from a “big name” author? And even “big name” is relative. Heinlein, Clark, Asimov are gradually disappearing from shelves. L’Amour may still be present, but how many western novels of equal or even better quality are gone? James Bond yes. Matt Helm not so much.

Fiction titles may be more likely to disappear than non-fiction because so many more are written each year competing for finite shelf space. Quality non-fiction also disappears.

So it goes…

Look up Glenn Beck's take on this.  He promotes the public collecting printed books (he's big on historical topics).

Many say "but they're available in electronic form!",  but Glenn has proof of many many that have been altered from the originals.

Minitrue lives.

I recall completing a report based upon instructions on the internet. Later the report was audited and the instructions had been changed and no longer supported what I had done. Thereafter always printed a hard copy of the instructions I was following.

Even printed materials are changed for reprinting. The Hardy Boys and Tom Swift novels pointed toward juveniles were so treated.
