This is the Sunbeam Mystery Slug, which was the first car to go over 200mph. It’s driver, whose name was almost as long as the car, was a fierce competitor of Sir Malcolm Campbell. The Slug’s driver was Henry O’Neil de Hane Segrave.

When I was very little,  there was a "pith" helmet in the toybox.

It was Dad's.  It was solid metal, with a ring of foam at the top.

We crashed into all kinds of stuff with it.

Turns out,  that Dad was an accomplished (Eagle Scout),  derby racer.

He said,  that on his last race,  blowing down the hill, at max,  the steering went out.

He was rippping at 1000mph, straight into the crowd.

But the crowd parted...

And there was a cop,  sitting on his motorcycle.

So Dad nailed him.  Dead center.

He said it was his last race.
