Walt Longmire
That's 4 pickups at my compound now. Lord help me. Bought a 93 F250 4x4. One owner, low miles. Clean and straight. Has the fuel injected 460 cubic inch V-8. Yeah the fuel mileage isn't great, but it won't matter. Uphill, downhill, pulling a heavy load. It's gonna get 9-10 mpg. I'll be making my typical add ons to it this summer. Steel headache rack with a receiver for the winch. Bumpers. Winch. Oversize tires. Probably camo paint it too. Or maybe just Army Green with a white star on the door. It already has the tow package and is set up for hauling a camper. Still has all 4 factory stainless hup caps. I'll be selling those when the after market wheels and tires go on. Yeah, I know. This thread sucks without pics. Later, dudes.....and dudettes. It's not even home yet.

jfost11
If it still has the factory intake tubing between the air filter box and the throttle body, pull that plastic piece in the middle out and cut the restricters off the front of it.

I does. I'll have a look at that. Got it home a bit ago. Will give it a wash in a few days. Thing is straight as a pin.

jfost11
My uncle had a '95, 2wd regular cab long bed with the 460. He cut the intake restrictors out, replaced the exhaust from the Y to the bumper with a 3" pipe and a high flow muffler, and gave it a K&N and an MSD ignition box, and bumped the timing up. After being used to riding in that truck, a dodge V10 felt like a slug. We were towing a 36' gooseneck with a race car and a bunch of parts to Rockingham one year and someone was attempting to follow in a '93 F250 with the 7.3 and an aftermarket turbo kit, towing a small open trailer and their Mustang. They couldn't keep up because the EGT was running too high trying to stay above 70. That 460 was running 80 like it was cool. Kept OPEC in business though.

I remember twenty years ago Gale Banks engineering built a Dodge Dakota pickup with a modified, but streetable Cummins Turbo Deisel in it. They took it to Bonneville and set a land speed record for a street-legal truck, with an average speed of around 213mph. What tickled me about it was that the Dakota dragged its own parts and tools trailer to Bonneville and back. After the record run, Banks Engineering used to use that Dakota as their part & errands running truck. 1

jfost11
I remember seeing some videos of Banks and his exploits with a road racing truck. He basically said when you dont have to worry about the fuel being a limitation, the sky is the limit. But I'm sure Gale had an intercooler on his rigs. That poor kid trying to keep up with us did not.

railfancwb
Get enough additional drivers, Walt, you can triple or quadruple head those log trailer trains out of the woods.

A '93 7.3 with aftermarket turbo and injectors would be making less than 300hp. They also made the best power at about 1400 rpms. If they were tuned for a quick start they would be terrible for highway speeds. Rear end ratio is a big deal, lots of the diesels had ratios for gas motors towing trailers.
Walt Longmire
Gave it a wash today. Needs a wax job now to make the old paint pop.
Walt Longmire
Not bad for 29 year old Alaska truck. Wax will make it even better along with some touch up paint.

Walt Longmire
I'm going to pick up some matching paint to cover the green the previous owner painted in the door sill. I know these vehicles with clear coat might not like the old school wax. What should I be using to bring the shine back?
Fog
Wax on. It works on clear coats too. There are other products available, but nothing beats turtle wax.
Walt Longmire
Talked with a guy today that wants to detail it. Inside, outside, and under the hood. He claims the paint will look like new except where it has obvious wear.

Back in early history (1950s) one of the jobs of the dutiful son was to polish off the Simonize wax that Dad had applied to the family sedan. Only required about three years of constant rubbing. Since the can warned against applying the wax in the sun, at least we had shade.

Even the last version of the 7.3 10 years later had less than 300. 250 in the autos and 275 with the stick shifts. But they had intercoolers which made about a 50 hp difference and kept the EGT down. My uncle parked his '95 for an '03 diesel that he continued to terrorize that trailer with at highway speeds.

I think any dullness was due to the crappy paint they used back then than the ineffectiveness of the wax products available. Remember, Earl Scheib would paint any car for $39.95. I can't find an earlier one, but I remember them from the 1950s.
