The Kentucky Derby

Here comes the Kentucky Derby, the most famous horse race in the world. It is always the first Saturday in May.

Two weeks beforehand, is the largest fireworks show in the United States...Thunder Over Louisville, and a rather large air show to boot.

My favorite part? I get to spend the next 3 weeks working brutally long hours. Since I'm old, and I can pull the seniority card, hopefully most of them will be in my car.

And they're off!  :horse:  And it's over!

I think that horse races need to have pit stops where they change the horse shoes and give the horse a carrot.

Better yet, a 24-hour endurance race.

In France.

In June.

I like the longer English Derby races. Long race over turf with obstacles. Test of horse, rider and overall horsemanship. Not just pure sprint speed. Sort of like a rally race VS a drag race.

Not a big horse-racing fan but I understand it’s kind-of like the Masters Tournament of the horse world.

First of three races in the Triple Crown. Quite a challenge for a three year old horse to win all three. Other two are Belmont Stakes and Preakness.

Well, we completed Thunder over Louisville. Possibly the largest air show and fireworks show in the nation. The titles for that change every year, but it's up there either way. We had easily 700,000 people attend the show, in a city that has about the same total population. Lot's of people from out of town.

We had incidents, it could have been worse, given the crime surge our city has experienced, like any decent sized city. I did have a homicide at 8 am the following morning, a Sunday morning. What the hell? It's Sunday morning after a party, stop killing each other and sleep in late!

I had a crazy lady (honestly cute and barely 20). She had to be wrestled to the ground, placed in both handcuffs and ankle restraints. She was grabbing random unwilling men by the groin. She offered to give me a bath...YEAH, no thank you maam, nope. For the record, we didn't hurt her, and she went to jail.

Next weekend we have a marathon and a huge parade. If we survive that, two weekends until the derby itself.

Cute and Crazy. Those are the interesting ones.

A cute and crazy random woman, in a very large tight crowd, suddenly white knuckle crushes your balls in her hand to the point of extreme pain. Yeah, we decided that is sexual assault, and charged her with such that. I'm sure the courts will amend it down to something akin to a speeding ticket, as usual for the courts.

But, I don't want to forget this is a Derby thread, just my personal working shifts...

You have to make them beforehand, and drink one every five seconds, because the race is so short:

The Mint Julep will always be the iconic Derby drink. I've been working at the derby since I was 14 years old. My Marine Corps JROTC unit worked at the derby on the clean up crew. Every Mint Julep comes in a custom glass for that year. I have quite the collection built up, most of which never actually contained alcohol.

kerbie, if you will be so kind for the Yankees and us good, decent people not blessed to be from Kentucky:

Is it loo-wee-vil or loovul?

I promise we Texans won't make fun if you pronounce Bexar county (where San Antonio is)  as becks-ar.

:cowboy2:

The Floridians here will make fun of both of us because that's what they do.
