Administrators Eric Posted February 27, 2022 Administrators Share Posted February 27, 2022 The Antonov An-225 Mriya (Dream) cargo aircraft, the largest cargo aircraft in the world and the only one of its kind, has been damaged and possibly destroyed. The aircraft was hangered at the Antonov Airport outside of Kiev. It was damaged during fighting with Russian forces trying to take the airport. The Ukraine government has said that it was destroyed, but this remains unconfirmed. I saw that big bird taxi and take off once from Sky Harbor Airport, in Phoenix. It was truly a sight to behold. 3

Fog
Even if only damaged I doubt it will ever fly again, simply not enough demand to cover the cost of repairs.
Batesmotel
Saw it in Salt Lake. John Huntsman hired it to sent emergency supplies to an earthquake. The freeway was clogged with people driving past to get a look at it. Sad to see it go. Senseless waste.

Quote Incredibly, there is a chance that the one-of-a-kind aircraft could return to the sky once the conflict subsides, with the Ukrainian government having vowed to “rebuild the plane” as a point of principle. Despite the An-255’s 1980s vintage, there is a realistic chance this could actually be achievable, as a second airframe — its construction halted by the collapse of first the Soviet economy and then the Soviet Union itself — remains in Ukrainian custody in Kyiv, with its completion long a pipe dream for many. Maybe they could salvage parts from the first, but I would not trust anything off that plane after that much damage, there is always damage you can't see. Kind of like restoring an old car, there is no money to be made, you do it because you have the disposable income to afford something no one else has. They knew the invasion was coming, it was arrogant to not move the plane out of harms way. But that pretty much sums up the leadership over there.
railfancwb
After almost all COVID all the time for two years, during which time flue deaths reportedly dropped from 2.8 million to 2800 and COVID deaths reportedly went from zero to 2.8 million, I have developed a high level of skepticism about government pronouncements. Any governments. Any pronouncements.
