Meat Loaf, the hardworking singer and actor whose Bat Out of Hell is one of the best-selling albums ever and who played Eddie in The Rocky Horror Picture Show, has died. He was 74.

The Grammy winner born Marvin Lee Aday died Thursday night with his wife Deborah by his side, Meat Loaf’s longtime agent Michael Greene told Deadline on behalf of the family. He added that the singer’s daughters Pearl and Amanda and close friends also had a chance to spend time with him and say their goodbyes during the last 24 hours. A cause of death is not being released.

This hurts. I get to work with celebrities on occasion. He was one of the most remarkable people I ever met. I spent an afternoon talking with him about not just his music but music in general. We spoke on the last 300 years of western music and the problems in the music industry today. He was one of about 5 celebrities I can truly think of as a bit of a friend. There are a couple who when we meet will come up to me to ask how I’ve been. He was a guy like that. His health was getting poor and I know he was in a lot of pain from old injuries and problems.

Rest In Peace my friend.

During his heyday, he had a personal team of paramedics that went on tour with him,  because it wasn't uncommon for him to actually die during / after a show.  And he's been known to,  after being revived,  taking a minute to get his wits collected,  and go back onstage.

Google some of his live Bat out of Hell concerts.  He was in pretty bad shape, even back then.

I read that, as a kid, he was always heavily into sports (likely footbal, huh?) and had been nicknamed "Meat", for as long as anyone could remember.

When they were approached for a record contract,  the bigwigs let it be known that they couldn't have a lead-singer, or band, named Meat.

So they came back with Meat Loaf,  which he had also been called in school.

Being the 70's,  they decided that was good enough.

Good to hear that about the guy, he was my age but born two months before me. A friend of mine who is also my age had a tour bus business in Nashville and rented buses mostly to rock and roll and other musicians because the country stars all liked to have their own buses. The two musicians who he liked the best of all the people he got to know and said that they were totally humble and who he became friends with were BB King and Carlos Santana.

Here's meat loaf singing the National Anthem:

I remember "Making out" with "Paradise by the dashboard light" playing.

Now we play it, loudly,  during every extended-family vacation,  with the girls at one end of the room and guys at the other,  while drunkenly scream-singing it at each other.
