Pope Francis’ slam of ‘selfish’ pet parents proves he’s never owned a dog

By Maureen Callahan New York Post

January 7, 2022

In the oddest pronouncement of his papacy, Francis — who took his name from St. Francis of Assisi, patron saint of animals — said this week that choosing to have dogs over children “diminishes us, takes away our humanity.” He also denigrated “this denial of motherhood and fatherhood” as a lesser earthly existence.

Leaving aside the glaring hypocrisy here — the pope serves a church that forbids him and his fellow cardinals, bishops, nuns and priests from ever having children — dogs make us more human. They make us better people. Dogs, I think, are actually superior to most people.

Ask Kelly Dowling, the Connecticut mom whose infant daughter nearly died in her crib three weeks ago and was saved by their 8-year-old Boston terrier, who kept head-butting the nursery door until her parents got up.

“We don’t deserve dogs,” Dowling said. The nomenclature changed long ago to reflect our evolving understanding of — and respect for — the canine-human bond. There are no more dog owners, only dog parents. Dogs are “fur babies,” a fully integrated part of the family. The idea that dogs are unlike children is ridiculous. I've seen custody battles break out over dogs. Short of setting up a college fund, having a dog is as heavy a responsibility — one with an expiration date, with heartbreak for the human built into the deal. I’ve seen people grieve for their dogs harder and longer than they have for friends and family.

It’s hard to understand such an off-brand comment from a pope the world considers revolutionary. He supports the big bang theory, evolution, the LGBTQ+ community, premarital sex, single moms. His mission has been inclusion and compassion. When Francis asked aloud, “Who am I to judge?,” he made headlines around the world, so antithetical was that to his very job description. So why the prejudice against those who choose dogs over children? Not everyone wants children. Not everyone should have children. Not everyone can have children, and those who can’t may have opted out after years of expense and physical and emotional suffering.

Why begrudge people their dogs? Why such a heartless take on man’s best friend? What a misstep for Pope Francis. Why not take his cue from the late Pope John Paul II, himself a beloved global figure, who once comforted a small boy grieving his dog with the reassurance that yes, all dogs go to heaven? “Animals,” John Paul II said, “are as near to God as men are.”

Last week, a German Shepherd named Tinsley led New Hampshire cops to a hidden off-road crash site, where her 31-year-old human, Cam Landry, and his friend lay seriously injured. “She’s a little guardian angel,” Landry said. “I couldn’t believe the amount of intelligence she had, to know that we were in distress and kind of do a Lassie thing and go get help.”

People Magazine, two weeks ago: “‘Mild Mannered’ Dog Rescues Iowa Family from Middle of the Night Carbon Monoxide Leak.” The Mirror, two weeks ago: “Abandoned Newborn Baby Saved by Litter of Puppies Who Kept Her Warm Overnight in Field.” People, last Thursday: “Dog Protects Owner Injured on Hike by Keeping Man Warm by laying next to him: ‘His Loyalty Did Not Stop.’”

Dogs save our lives, literally and figuratively.

As the old saying goes: Dog is God spelled backward.

The church prohibited the clergy from marriage so the church could inherit family fortunes. The church had the family donate everything to the member who became a priest or nun. Then the church took it all when they died. Leaving the rest of the family destitute.

Not that they stopped having sex. Just didn’t care for any children they had.

This the absolute truth. We raise them from babies and, just when they're teenagers, we have to say goodbye.

I sincerely hope God grants me the ability to see my dear pet friends should I make it to heaven. If I don't make it, you guys please look out for them...

I do not love my dogs nearly the same as I love my children, but this pope is a raving nutter with no concept of reality.  He’s also highly hypocritical, preaching that people should have more children while screeching about supposedly human-caused global warming, and belonging to a group that forbids him from procreating himself.  The inconsistencies are stunning.

History books revealed that many popes were fathers. If memory serves one pope was female - which in those ignorant days prevented her from being a father.

There is no humanity if you don't recognize the ability of different species to, love, help each other, protect each other.  I guess the pope learned nothing from the Bible!  I have learned nothing from him!

I don't trust anyone that can't love all life.  He seems to believe he is so almighty that he can determine which portions of the Bible we should believe and thus putting himself above God.

You would think the Pope would be someone who was a strong believer in miracles. John Paul II was and spoke of miracles many times. And yet this man, who is focused more on politics than he is matters of a spiritual nature, is obviously not aware of the many stories of dogs saving their owner's lives in truly miraculous ways. And that fact that Pope Francis was named after the patron saint of animals is the cruelest of ironies

Doesn't that mean no more boom boom for Mom?
