An interesting idea for drunk drivers.

Heinlein wrote in one of his books that killing someone in Luna was considered a civil infraction, the fine being the estimated production that person could produce over the rest of their lifetime.

I'm not opposed to having the punishment for crimes being "cruel and unusual", because making the punishment nice and friendly doesn't do anything to deter crime.

I’ve got a real bad ******* attitude about drunk drivers.

Me too. Watched my brother get smoked by one.

I say hold the Entraillympics. Whoever has the longest gut wins.

1st DUI - lose license for one year

3rd DUI - lose license permanently

ANY conviction of driving on suspended license - lose license permanently

This policy is why we have too many DUI deaths.

Wayyyyyyy tooooo lenient.  If someone is too stupid to call an Uber instead of driving drunk, they need to be removed from the gene pool, immediately and with extreme prejudice.  I will pull the trigger myself and we can all write off my sociopathic tendencies to the TBI caused by a drunk driver when I wasn't even 2 years old.  It'll be poetic justice.

That would be effective, but I doubt you could get it implemented.

Las Cruces, NM. 1990's iirc. Older guy arrested for DWI. District attorney started getting court orders to go into(proper term?) old court records. In the previous 2 1/2 years, records showed 16 arrests for DWI (Naturally 16 is only times he was caught).

No record of EVER having a license or who bought him the cars. FINALLY, a judge with some cojones gave him 10 years in state prison! Would be in his 70's when released.

I'm with ya gwalchmai, I was a paramedic in the area back then. But 16? You can drive without a license, but what about driving without a car? If the law doesn't deter the crime, change the law until it does!

We don't have a policy anywhere near this strict now, do we?

Some states lock you up on the second or third time. But not for long enough. Nothing stops these assholes except death or a long sentence actually carried out. It's one of the few things I support harsh mandatory minimum sentencing for.

Yeah, that's my point. Polite but firm sentence the first time. And mean it. I guess I should have said jail time for driving without a license.

I don't see it happening, though, because drunks make the laws.

I'm really not a fan of the whole set BAC levels that we all have to follow because we are all different and hold our liquor in different ways.  Hell, I got one friend who can drink circles around me when it comes to wine or hard liquor, but a single sip of beer and he pukes like Linda Blair.  The solution I always had in mind was that when you are 21 and over, anytime you renew your driver's license, you also take tests where you deliberately drink alcohol in excess so that way you can find your own custom limit.  It's absolutely ridiculous that a BAC of 0.08% has to apply to EVERYONE.  I'm not trying to condone drinking and driving, just saying we all are different.

A person must have a vehicle to drive drunk.

If you cannot own a vehicle because you have driven while drunk, what is the situation for the person who lends or rents a vehicle.

to rent a vehicle you're required to provide a license.

If a vehicle is lent to a person without a license, then that's their fault, and vehicle being confiscated will teach them very quickly not to lend vehicles to people without checking first.

Some off road vehicles don't require a license in order to purchase, so I've heard of DUIs on riding lawnmowers and the like.

In some states a DUI extends to things like riding horses, so no, technically you don't have to have a vehicle.

Drunk boating is huge around here, and there are no speed limits except near bridges and no-wakes. And hundreds of places or people to rent from for anything that floats.

Thats too many strikes.

I am ok with one year for the first offense unless someone was injured or killed.

2nd should be permanent suspension. Drivers licenses are issued far to freely anyway.

Presence or absence of drivers license has no effect on those who would drive drunk. last time I was rear ended was by a woman whose license was suspended except for a designated route to/from her job. I was not on that route when she hit me.

A country music singer was known to use a riding lawnmower to get to the bar when his wife took the car keys.
