TBS Using SSL Security Now - Please Read

Hi folks. I got an SSL certificate for the site this week and just set it up. The pages should now be responding as secure pages, ie: https://theboresite.com . I don't use the 'www'. If you type in 'https://www.theboresite.com', it should automatically redirect to 'https://theboresite.com'.

You will still get security alerts on many pages. When people link to images from other sites, those calls may or may not be using secure urls. If they aren't, they will throw a security warning. It doesn't mean there is a security issue. FWIW, it is simple for people to download those images to their own computers and then opload them here when they post them, but I won't force people to start doing so, at this time. I'd appreciate it though if people started getting familiar with the process though.

If anyone is having trouble getting to the site, or experiencing problems once here, please let me know. Please include any warnings or error messages when you contact me. Thanks. Eric

OK, there is a minor issue with the certificate installation. It might generate an SSL error, but it shouldn't interfere with the site's operation and it does not compromise site security. I am working on fixing it.

I spoke too soon, I think. The SSL certificate is installed correctly. There is a type of intermediate certificate called a CA certificate (Certificate Authority). Having a CA cert isn't always necessary for an SSL cert to work and it may be unnecessary with the cert I bought. The company did not send me the damned welcome email when my cert was issued though, so I'm not sure. The cert works properly for me in Firefox, Safari and Chrome, so I am inclined to believe things are good to go. I am waiting to hear back from the SSL comany though, to be sure. Stay tuned for more details.

SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) and its successor,  TLS (Transport Layer Security) are less about encrypting packets between two nodes than they are about ensuring that the node you connect with is what it says it is because it has a unique certificate that says, Yes, this is really me and not a Russian hacker.

That said, the sale and administration of certificates is big business and scaring end users sells a lot of them unnecessarily.

The same with VPNs (Virtual Private Networks.)  Companies instill a level of fear into the public and then sell them the remedy.
