MO Fugga
“A catalytic converter and the small amount of scrap value it holds is not worth the risk of losing your life,” the sheriff’s office added. I disagree and hope this happens more often. Thieves should be hanged.
kerbie18
Theft of Cat converters is common in my area. My daughter goes to a small private school that has it's own school van. The van has had it's cat converter stolen TWICE.

railfancwb
I’ve read that some new car dealerships have had their lots stripped by a gang in one night. Say 100 new vehicles… maybe $100 per converter stolen. What is the cost per vehicle to replace those? Maybe $1,000 each? Maybe more? And probably retail price reduction as well.

In this area, at least, recycle places now require enough proof of ownership and who you are documentation to have greatly reduced theft and sales of copper. When I have taken aluminum cans to sell for recycling they have insisted on photo ID and signature.

Around here for a while your home might be ransacked and stripped of copper pipe and wiring if the tweakers knew you would be gone long enough. The recyclers finally stopped taking wiring that the insulation had been burned off from, and made some changes to how they would buy copper pipe.

Stealing HVAC units - especially window size - was a thing around here for awhile. Requiring photo ID and paying only by check stopped a lot of that. Even more, replacement of copper and brass pipe and coils with aluminum took the easy money away.
jfost11
Had a guy stop by today trying to buy my old truck. When I told him it was a project for another day, or year, and not for sale, he inquired about getting the catalytic converters from it. I laughed and told him I gutted them over a decade ago.
