I did a quicky naive internet search. "Plaster" is rated at 849 kg/cu m, while gold is 19,320

Now, maybe "they" assumed the plaster was solid but in reality the gold statue was hollow and 10ct, but it seems remarkable that no one said "This thing too heavy. Sum ting wong!"

That and "recorded history" was mostly written by people that never left the comfort of their own homes/cities, by people that never went anywhere or saw anything but third hand accounts, and made up the rest of what was "known fact"
