This weekend sounds ominous.

The weather kid on the morning news warned of an Unsettled High Energy Atmospheric System Event.

Or in old fart speak, thunder storm. The more syllables the news idiots use, the less I trust them.

Like George Carlin talked about Shell Shock became Battle Fatigue and is now Acute Post Traumatic Stress Disorder Syndrome. The more syllables, the less effective the government deals with it.

It's a solar storm.  A few days ago not only did the sun have an eruption.  But we have rotated into the solar storm.

MINOR GEOMAGNETIC STORM WATCH: A CME hit Earth's magnetic field during the late hours of May 17th (~1600 UT). Its impact was weak, lifting the solar wind speed by a measly 25 km/s. A second, more effective CME might arrive later today, according to NOAA. Minor G1-class geomagnetic storms are therefore still possible on May 18-19. Aurora alerts: SMS Text.

Solar wind
speed: 384.3 km/sec
density: 7.0 protons/cm3

A periodic solar event called a “Grand Solar Minimum” has started in 2020 and will probably last until 2070.

Quote

During this period, the sun’s magnetic field is weak, allowing extra cosmic rays into the solar system. All in all, we will enter a cooler time period… And this cold spell may last up to 50 years…

During a solar minimum, and particularly, a Grand Solar Minimum, more cosmic rays (CRs) enter Earth’s atmosphere.

These particles act as cloud nuclei by ionization and propagate low level cloud formation.

Quote

A Grand Solar Minimum occurs approximately every 200 years. The last notable event was the Dalton Minimum c. 1790 – 1820, which was followed by the end of the Little Ice Age, the 2nd Industrial Revolution, unprecedented demographic increase and the beginning of the modern global warming trend (which began c. 1850 and lasted until c. 2000).

Cycle 25 has started already.  It won't be a banner year for activity but it will be trending upwards for the next five or six years...it's not a grand solar minimum as feared.

There was a lot of talk about this over the last couple of years.  But it truly looks like things are changing.

https://www.nasa.gov/press-release/solar-cycle-25-is-here-nasa-noaa-scientists-explain-what-that-means

Solar Cycle 25 has begun. During a media event on Tuesday, experts from NASA and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) discussed their analysis and predictions about the new solar cycle – and how the coming upswing in space weather will impact our lives and technology on Earth, as well as astronauts in space.

The Solar Cycle 25 Prediction Panel, an international group of experts co-sponsored by NASA and NOAA, announced that solar minimum occurred in December 2019, marking the start of a new solar cycle. Because our Sun is so variable, it can take months after the fact to declare this event. Scientists use sunspots to track solar cycle progress; the dark blotches on the Sun are associated with solar activity, often as the origins for giant explosions – such as solar flares or coronal mass ejections – which can spew light, energy, and solar material into space.

“As we emerge from solar minimum and approach Cycle 25’s maximum, it is important to remember solar activity never stops; it changes form as the pendulum swings,” said Lika Guhathakurta, solar scientist at the Heliophysics Division at NASA Headquarters in Washington.

Next time you're in Alamogordo, NM, take the Cloudcroft highway up the mountains and follow the signs to Sunspot. Drive past all the high fences around telescopes belonging to God only knows what those abbreviations stand for, and the road ends at the open to the public MIT,/Air Force solar telescopes. Don't let being the only car in the 30 space parking lot bother you. Enjoy the short walk to the entrance, the mule deer get nervous if you walk towards them. Inside there's a huge tall something, in the wall is a black & white tv with a full live image of the sun.

Do I get to meet your avatar if I go there?

How bout a "Weather App" with some really Fun "Insults and Bar Room language"?  It is just Hysterical.  Definitely don't have the volume on when you're in a Crowd!!  :anim_lol:

WTForecast app

In the Google Play store

Don't think It's for Iphones, not sure.

It’s silly, but there’s something about hearing a robotic voice exclaim, “These clouds can go **** themselves,” on a rainy day, that makes you feel like your weather app knows what’s up.

It's available in the App Store for iPhones, too... and I'm sure I'm going to accidentally check it at church or my parents' house, or something equally wrong!
