I don't mean to hijack, Eric, but I shall drift a bit from your theme of great drummers in contemporary rock and roll.

I suggest that we must consider the greats of the Big Band era, such as Max Roach, Gene Krupa, Buddy Rich, Louis Bellson, Dave Tough, Don Lamond, Chick Webb -- the great era of percussion innovation for  drums as it was for wind instruments and piano.

Most of what contemporary drummers do, those guys invented it.

Most of the great rock drummers (Peart, Bonham, Gadd, etc) will say those guys were who they listened to growing up.

Bill Ward is a wild man on the drums! (And a bonus for a clean shaven Tony Iommi.)
