jmohme
Shot placement is everything! There are those that say the a .22 is not a viable self defense weapon. I say, a .22 beats the hell out of a nothing. Edited August 11, 2017 by jmohme
G19 DB
Yup. Agree. Until you meet up w/ BG in your home, you may not know how hard a shot that is. That said, I've got some 22lr's in strategic locations.
DWARREN123
Better than nothing but many better choices out there. I do like a 22lr for fun, small varmint and such.
Old School
At a more philosophical level, usefulness or utility takes on different contexts. For the utility of self defense, the .22 isn't going to look as good as other options, but sure looks better than nothing. For me there is something deeply satisfying thinking about the CZ453 in my safe. I can take that to my range and shoot safely, reliably and accurately for hours with little expense, no ear ringing or shoulder crushing. That "satisfaction utility" is important to me. I was taught to shoot with a 22 and I taught my kids the same way. Freud would have a field day with my affinity for the 22. Man, that Savage A22 is calling my name...

Not going to argue that point, but I also know at least one person that is lucky to get one good shot off with a 9mm, and almost zero chance of an effective follow up. The same person can group 9 shots out of a MKIII so fast it would make you cry. Back to the same old thing. Shoot what you shoot best.
dudel
I think it's a good idea to be proficient with everything in your safe. You never know when you might have to use it. That said, I know my limits with all our guns. For example I wouldn't use SWMBO NAA Black Widow past 10ft. I wouldn't use a Glock past 25 yrds. Not saying I can't hit a target beyond those points; but that's my comfort range with those guns. You can't explain away a bad shot saying you aren't familiar with the weapon.
willie-pete
.22's are way fun. Here's a Scorpion on a Steel Challenge stage. wp Edited August 12, 2017 by willie-pete
Peng
You really only need 4 guns and a .22 is one of them. A .22LR, a shotgun, a scoped rifle and a SD handgun. Could even go to 3 with a slug barrel. Everything else is details.

gwalchmai
I'm just trying to think of something I would want so badly that I'd still want it with a couple of .22LRs in my COM. A ride to the ER, maybe.

ROB
Nobody wants to get shot, even with a .22. I suspect in the din of a good close range gunfight, it's not going to matter to anyone what you're being shot with...you're not going to want any of it.
Cheepbeer
22 doesn't have any knock down power, but gettin' sprayed in the face by one can't be any fun!

Not optimum for defensive purposes, but ain't too many people gonna run towards a .22 mag dump.
RonS
There have been times in my life when the only firearm in the house was a .22. I just made sure it was loaded with Stingers and didn't worry about it.

That could put an awful lot of hurt on somebody very quick.

RonS
Bear in mind that anything can happen. Friend of mine was slaughtering a hog and had a 22 bounce off the skull. That was fun inside a pole barn.
