Usefulness of the .22

At a more philosophical level, usefulness or utility takes on different contexts. For the utility of self defense, the .22 isn't going to look as good as other options, but sure looks better than nothing.

For me there is something deeply satisfying thinking about the CZ453 in my safe. I can take that to my range and shoot safely, reliably and accurately for hours with little expense, no ear ringing or shoulder crushing. That "satisfaction utility" is important to me.

I was taught to shoot with a 22 and I taught my kids the same way. Freud would have a field day with my affinity for the 22. Man, that Savage A22 is calling my name...

Better than nothing but many better choices out there.

I do like a 22lr for fun, small varmint and such.

Not going to argue that point, but I also know at least one person that is lucky to get one good shot off with a 9mm, and almost zero chance of an effective follow up.

The same person can group 9 shots out of a MKIII so fast it would make you cry.

Back to the same old thing. Shoot what you shoot best.

I think it's a good idea to be proficient with everything in your safe. You never know when you might have to use it.

That said, I know my limits with all our guns. For example I wouldn't use SWMBO NAA Black Widow past 10ft. I wouldn't use a Glock past 25 yrds. Not saying I can't hit a target beyond those points; but that's my comfort range with those guns.

You can't explain away a bad shot saying you aren't familiar with the weapon.

You really only need 4 guns and a .22 is one of them.

A .22LR, a shotgun, a scoped rifle and a SD handgun. Could even go to 3 with a slug barrel.

Everything else is details.

Don't tell the Mrs that. (You really only need 4 guns ) :)

I bet you can't get 2 other people on this board to agree with that.

Nobody wants to get shot, even with a .22.

I suspect in the din of a good close range gunfight, it's not going to matter to anyone what you're being shot with...you're not going to want any of it.

Agree. Not optimum for defensive purposes, but ain't too many people gonna run towards a .22 mag dump.

Agree. My PMR-30 with two full mags gives you 60 rounds of 22 WMR at your finger tips. That could put an awful lot of hurt on somebody very quick.

I'm almost there with you, but I would say

You really only need 4 TYPES of guns and a .22 is one TYPE of them.

i DON'T CARE HOW BIG HE IS, OR HOW BAD HE IS, OR HOW HOPPED UP ON METH HE IS; YOU SHOOT HIM IN THE EYE WITH A .22 AND YOU'RE GOING TO GET HIS ATTENTION.

I think you will have a very hard time trying to get the Meth head to hold still while you try to shoot him in the eye.
